Dear Judy,
My name is Diane Pilakowski-Betts. I am a great granddaughter of Anton and Francisyka Pilakowski. They immigrated to the U.S. on April 15, 1873. Their first child, Louis, was born in Berea, Ohio -- three months after their arrival. They had two other children in Berea by 1876. Then they moved to Nebraska and lived in Posen (Howard Co) and they may have lived in Sherman Co for awhile. Altogether, the couple had seven children including Louis, Roman, Casper (Jasper), Anna, Walter, Stanislaus, and Vincent Joseph. The last four children were born in Howard, Co. Unfortunately, the parents died around 1886 of TB, leaving their fourteen-year-old son, Louis, to raise the other children. The youngest child was 2 years old at the time.

I have researched this family all they way back to Iwno, Poland. However, there is one line that I can't find what happened to them after 1902. That line was descended from Anton and Francisyka Pilakowski's son Roman (other given name is Renea.) He had two sons by Annie Martinski after he married her on Nov 9, 1897. According to the 1900 census, the one son was named John (age 3/12) and the other son was named Edmond. It gets a bit confusing because Roman's brother, Louis, also named my father John and he was born about the same time as his first cousin -- the son of Roman. Also, another brother named Stanislaus named his oldest son Edmund, and that youngster was born around 1906, slightly later than Roman's son.

After Roman died, he didn't have much to leave his young wife and children. His estate was valued at $392.00. In a short time, Annie Martinski Pilakowski married John Zujewsky of Omaha. He was probably a Russian immigrant. That is where I lost this line. I hope you know something that may shed light for both of us concerning this ancestral puzzle.

I would be happy to forward copies of family group sheets for you to see. Just let me know if you want them. I have other documents as well.

Also, a very strange thing happened in the 1950s to my first cousin, Donald Safarik. His mother was my father's sister. He grew up on a farm near Dannevirk, NE. Then he went to college, and after that he came to CA to look for work. He hadn't been in CA long before the postmaster in one of the little towns in Howard or Sherman Counties forwarded a letter to him from Poland. The author explained that many, many years ago a relative had immigrated to the U.S. and he lived not far from Posen. However, in a short time, the relatives stopped getting letters from their immigrant relative. Donald read the letter over and over and decided somehow he was related to the Polish man. So, he corresponded with him, and eventually he visited the man and his family near Poznan, Poland. The man told him that originally there were 8 Pilakowski brothers living in the Poznan area. After the Prussians moved into that region and took control, the Pilakowskis suffered economically, politically and religiously. The family decided one brother should stay, and the other seven men should immigrate to the U.S. Perhaps the relative you are researching is related to the family my cousin knew in Poland.

I am waiting to receive a copy of the actual ship manifest to see if that last story is true or just legend. If all of the brothers came together, they should all be listed on that manifest.

I hope you get this email. I see it has been six years since you posted on ancestry. One way or another, please give me a reply. I have medical information that probably should be shared with other Pilakowski family members.

Thank you,
Diane Pilakowski-Betts email:dfbetts@gmail.com
