Re: African-American Pigg (Brenda Minor)
I asked...Because my famly has PIGG descendants that came out of the state of Tennessee. They're caucasions, but it's been rumored that there is some Indian blood in this line. She was living in Giles county,TN in 1850 and had married into the FARLEY family. I haven't checked on it yet, but it's possible that some of those folks were slave owners. I don't know yet. I'm just wondering about it. Good luck on your search. B.

Re: African-American Pigg (Brenda Minor)
That would make a lot of sense. My PIGG ancestor was Rosalie PIGG-FARLEY. Her parents supposed had some trouble relocating sometime between 1850-1860. One of the descendants say the father & one of the children drowned in the Mississippi river. But he didn't have any additional information on this event. It's been said that they traveled to or thru Illinois, then on to Arkansas. Which is where all of the children are found living with other people on the 1860 census. Now they all got married and ended up living in SE Arkansas, NE Texas, and eventually: the Choctaw Nation. Or McCurtain county,OK. Relatives say there was TEADE/TADE involved somewhere. But I can't find it. None of these folks show up on the Dawes Rolls. Of course, that record was taken after the parents died and the children were mostly grown up with families of their own by 1900. IF they were part Choctaw, I sure would love to document it....somehow. I know already that that would be a monumental task, if even possible. Can you tell me any more about your knowledge of a connection between the PIGGS and the Choctaws. I'm an enrolled member of that tribe already and know for a fact that they were slave owners at one time. A sad fact, but true. TY, Brenda

Re: African-American Pigg (Brenda Minor)
The reason I know about choctaw was from my mom but she is gone. On the Allen side my gggrandmother was choctaw. Thats all I know but give me a minute and I will see if I can find this list a person sent me with 200 hundred names of obits that are related. Its listed on the Afregeneas web sit but you have to really look for it. Every year in California the Piggs' have a big reunion and so does the Wards who are descendant of Allens' and related to Piggs'. My great uncle also married a Pigg. Are you up researching now

Re: African-American Pigg (Brenda Minor)
HI - Long time since I have been on the board..but all the emails from this discussion has peaked my interest big time.
First, unless there is two Pigg family Reunions every year in California... it is thrown by my family at my parents cabin every Labor Day weekend- I think that 2005 was the 27th annual family reunion? We normally have 40+ every year. It started when my father's sister Virginia passed away unexpectedly and this is what he did to keep all her kids and the entire faimly in touch with each other.
Second... I have known of African-American Piggs.. there is a family here in Santa Rosa CA who are African American and I am constantly asked if we are related- and then most quickly retract the question as I am white. My family is from the N. Carolina, Arkansas and surounding area. Most ended up in Oklahoma, moving west in 1930's along with the McCartys. My Grandfather is John Efton Pigg, who was hired by the WesternPacific RailRoad, Feather River Canyon line about 1936 as my Dad ( Ervyl ) was two when they came out west. My Dad has indicated that his grandfather passed away in Texas (which is where I have believed our native american was)
I have quite a bit of information that I am going to have to pull out. With two kids under two.. I haven't got to do much research in the last 2 years... so I am pretty sure that there is new info on the board that I need to add to the tree.
I am going to have to get out my tree and start digging again. ;-)

Re: African-American Pigg (Brenda Minor)
Hi, I am glad you are back on the board. I am a "cousin" from Oklahoma, my g-grandmother was Nora Pigg Melton, John Efton's older sister. We exchanged information several years ago. I have been trying to track down the native american connection and have by the process of elimination narrowed it down to one likely candidate, Nancy Wheeler who was the mother of Amanda Gimlin, John Richard Pigg's mother. I have been working with a group of Gimlin "cousins" and can't find any native-american mention in any of the Gimlin lines. Major problem now is that I cannot find any information regarding Nancy Wheeler and this would tend to support the fact that she may have been native-american and would not have been listed in any of the usual records.
I am interested in the mention that your dad made to his grandfather dying in Texas. Could this have possibly been John Pigg rather than John Richard Pigg? I found a Chaffin Funeral Home Record for John Richard stating that he died in Christian County at Highlandville and he is burried in Highlandville. However, John Pigg's death place and burial is still a mystery, so is much about him including a definite name for his wife.
I have put my whole database on Rootsweb.com for security sake, I fear a computer crash and don't trust completely CD backups. You can find it under the database "megsmess"
I would love to share information with you and would especially like to obtain information regarding the Pigg descendants that went to California. We made several trips to California when I was a child and I know we met "Pigg cousins" but I was too young to remember names. I have better connections to the Sasser branch of family and the others from Missouri and Arkansas who moved to Oklahoma. One of the Sasser cousins posted a copy of Rebecca Sasser Pigg's photo on the web on the Luther Web Site. I am at my office and don't have the address here. Will send you the address if you are interested, youn can download and print a copy if you want to.
Look forward to hearing from you and sharing information.
