Pigg family 19th Cent MS.

Dear Elisa,
May be coincidental, but my paternal ggrandfather Alvis Alexander Pigg
found on Indian Territory now McCurtain County, OK. 1900 census shows
him to be born in MS. His father un-named b TN and mother b MS.. One of
my grandmother's brothers was named George Wesley Pigg b Jan 1873 AR.
We have no documentation tracing this Pigg line farther back.
We would like very much to see the 1850 MS. census you speak of. If
that census format follows the format of the 1900 census we would know
Mary's and her father and mother's birth states.
This Mary Pigg may be my gggrandmother and if so I could at least fill
in Alvis's siblings that were at home in 1850. We have a tentative
birth date for Alvis A. Pigg as Jan 1852 or 53 which would be impossible
as your Mary Pigg was a widow in 1850. Also Mary would be about 52 when
Alvis was born. Not impossible but unlikely as frontier motherhood was a
hard life. Alvis could not read nor write and we find considerable
inconsistencies in family lore. So if Alvis is not Mary's son perhaps
Mary's deceased husband had a brother. Which is more likely.
We find in the Government Land Office records in MS. a Mary A. Pigg
being issued a land patent
for 80.83 acres at

Aliquot

# 1, Parts E½NW, Blk 13/, Twnshp 9-N, Range 5-E, Fract. Sect.
No, Meridian-

CHOCTAW, State MS., Counties MADISON and SCOTT, Survey Nr. --- in
1847.

We find William Pigg issued 40 acres October 8, 1835 again in Madison.
Could be Mary's husband. When I get time I'll find the proximity of
these two parcels. I know a web site that locates these.

This was not Leake co. MS..

We find your David L. Pigg taking 120 acres in Leake Co. in October 1,
1859, then 40 more acres in October 1, 1859.

But there is a James Pigg that was issued 8 parcels totaling 703 acres
in Madison and Hinds Counties from 1829 to 1840

Please relate your source for this Leake co. MS census.

Best regards,

Riley, My Mary is also found in the 1860 Leake co. census living with on of her sons. She wasn't remarried and it still appears that her youngest is George W. Pigg b.1839. It is not until 1880 that the federal census asks for birth states of parents. I failed to copy that 1850 census but I get most of my census records through the church of the Latter Day Saints. Also for a subscription there are 1850 censuses on <familytreemaker.com>'s library. I wondered about that James Pigg in Maddison co. also. I had a librarian check on him and it turns out he was found guilty of murder. I'll keep an eye out for your Alvis Alexander Pigg. Did you check <familysearch.org>? Quite possibly we connect with Mary's husband and his siblings. Elisa <elisa8094@aol.com>

Riley, I got curious so I checked for your Alvis Pigg and found a possibility for his parents. Alvis Pigg married Nancy C. Washburn in 1849, Tishomingo co. MS. Elisa

The Pigg and Washburn Families in Tishomingo County MS. In the
1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census.

In the Tishomingo Co. edition of the 1850 census, Alvis The elder’s
name is spelled Abner but his wife and kids are the correct but this
was before Alvis the younger was born so this was not a confusion.
In 1850 Alvis the elder gives this information: his age is 21, probably
given before his birthday, I think he was born in 1828 after that
census was taken. His wife was Nancy Washburn and her age was
given as 15 and she aready had a two month old daughter Phebee but
listed in the 1860 census as "Toletta J.". That was all of the Alvis the
elder’s family at that time. Also listed as living with the Washburns,
Mr. Piggs inlaws, was a Laurana Pigg 18 years old from TN. Since
Alvis here was not but 21, she may have been a younger sister.

But at that time was listed a Nimrod Pigg from NC who was listed as
52 (there is a conflict with later data on age). His wife was Lucinda,
37 b in TN. Their son Coleman 16 TN and Isaac 11 MS. So Nimrod
came from NC to TN where he married then to MS between 11 and
16 years before 1850 or between 1834 and 1839. So Nimrod was the
first one in Tishomingo County. We don’t see any recorded
recognizable interaction between Nimrod and his Pigg neighbors so
they may not have neen related. There are other Piggs here born in N
and SC. There are many Piggs clans in TN and MS who cannot prove
kinship. However, these Piggs did lives next door to each other.

Also Listed in 1850 was a Davis Pigg, 25. (Alvis named his youngest
son Davis D) With Davis was from TN listed a Martha 17 from TN
and an Ellender 8 from TN. Their last names was presumed to be
Pigg but may have been wife and sister or sisters

This makes Davis an older brother of Alvis, he may also been a big
brother to the three sisters Laurana 18 Martha 17 and Ellender 8 all
from TN.

Next to the Piggs was the John Washburns with John 35 Al and his
wife Nancy 28 AL and son John AL, Ellen 10 AL, William 8 MS,
George 6 MS, Elizabeth 2 AL. Laurana Pigg 18 TN also lived with
the Washburns. So between 1840 and 1842 the Washburns moved
from AL to MS. Both Mr. Washburn’s wife and oldest daughter were
named Nancy. His daughter Nancy is the wife of Alvis the elder.

Mr. Washburns older brother(?) Gabriel 43, born in SC and wife
Catherine Washburn born in NC with daughter Nancy 14 AL, James
also 14 AL, Rebecca 10 TN, Thomas TN 8. So he was older, he
moved to MS after his brother(?) John.

In the 1860 census a new Pigg family was added, a David H Pigg 23,
a day laborer from AL and his wife Feriba 22 TN, Jas. Pigg 4 AL and
Columbus 2 MS. Mr. David H apparently dies or leaves the family as
he is no longer listed in the house though his wife and another child is
listed later in 1870 and 1880.

In the 1860 census is listed the other Alvis the elder’s children,
Phebee 11, William 8, Alvis the younger 7, Isaac J. L, 6, Davi d D. 4.

In the 1860 census was also Nimrod 62, still farming and wife
Lucinda, the census must have been later this year as Lucinda’s age
is listed as 48. But they have a new listed child Asa Pierce 11. Since
he was not listed in 1850 indicates the 1860 census was taken later in
that year.

The Alvis Piggs do not appear in the 1870 or 1880 census.but there is
the John Washburns did not appear in my 1860 census (maybe bad
research) but are in the 1870 census but not the 1880. This 1870
census lists some children not on the 1850 census. This lists a Nancy
J at 17 years old but his oldest daughter was named Nancy and she
was 35 when this census was taken. There was so many Nancies
back then, it would confuse a census taker. This age 17 is not
consistent with any known Nancies I know of but she is lissted. Then
a Mary F. 13 and a Pinkney 12.

There also is a New John B. Washburn listed probably the son of
John above as born in AL and 33 years old and his wife Martha 30
born in MS.They have a daughter Mary E. 9 and som John P. 4 all
MS.

In 1870 the last listing of Nimrod Pigg is now listed and is 72 and his
wife at 57.

This is the last listing I have of Piggs in Ms is Feriba Pigg, wife or
widow of David H. Pigg is in 1880, she was a seamstress supporting
herself and children. She still has in her house with Columbus 21, Jeff
D. 19 and Ellen L Pigg 16.

Alvis is listed in the 1870 & 1880 census in Arkansas. In 1870 Phebee is called Gelithan but all the other children are listed correctly and by 1880 Alvis the younger is not living with his parents. Oddly in 1870 wife Nancy is not listed but she returns in 1880. Perhaps she was away visiting family or something.
