The first census of the United States, that of 1790, lists only one Pigford in the State of North Carolina (Census of North Carolina 1790 Government Printing Office, 1908, Page 192). He is William Pigford, Wilmington District, North Carolina, New Hanover County. The 1800 census New Hanover County, North Carolina Page 166 lists a Will Pigford.
Names of the children of William "Lost Billie" Pigford in the order of their appearance in his will of 1801, all born North Carolina are: William,(Jr.); Jacob; Elizabeth Aiken thought to have married an Allen Fleming who is named in the will; Martha "Patsy"; Edward; Margaret; Timothy; and Solomon.
Also, see
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncduplin/petition.htm William Pigford was one of the signers of the "1799 Petition To Divide Bladen, Duplin, and New Hanover Counties". Also signing the petition was Benjamin Fussell whom William "Lost Billie" Pigford was bound to until the age of 21 because he was an orphan. John Wright signed just under William Pigford which is interesting as a later Pigford was named Wright Pigford. Perhaps a female somewhere in the family was a Wright or one of the Pigfords honored a friend by naming a child "Wright". It would be fun to research if I run out of anything else to research. In William Pigford, Sr.'s will, the east and west sides of Sills Creek is mentioned.
If anyone is from that area, perhaps they recognize the name and know the location of Sills Creek. I would love to know where it is if it still exists.
William Pigford, Jr. remained in North Carolina as a will was filed in New Hanover County in the mid 1800's (written 28 September AD 1836). His wife was Hannna; grandson Isaac Newton; daughter Susanna Newton; son-in-law James Newton; William Newton grandson; and a Solomon Pigford (probably his brother) were named in the will. Hope all of this helps someone out there in their search.
