I am searching for any information on my great grandfather, Stanislaus Piech. He immigrated to Chicago in 1880 from Poland/Austria. He was accompanied by wife Mary(anna) nee Wasilewski and children Andrew and Maria. I'm particularly curious about what town they might be from. Any other Piech's know their ancestor's hometown?

Hi, I am a Piech in Chicago. My grandpa, John (Jan)Piech, and his brother, Martin (Marcin) Piech came to Chicago from Lakta Gorna Poland. John was a butcher in the stockyards and also was a bar owner. Martin was in the building trades.

Hi and thanks for the info. Do you know when they were born and when they came to the US? I haven't found any solid leads on where Stanislaus is from, so maybe this will lead to something. I'm also planning a trip to Chicago this summer to do a little research. Do you have any tips on places to look for info?

John (Jan) Piech was born June 3, 1887, died July 21, 1971.
Martin (Marcin) Piech was born November 11, 1884, died May 13, 1977. Their parents were Lukasz Piech and Anna Kowalska Piech. I have both of their passports. The Piech family owns Porsche, but it's probably a slim chance we're related. We were in Poland last fall, but focused our research in the Zakopane area where I know I have relatives on my mom's side. The Piech side has been more elusive. The passports say they were from Lakta Gorna, but I haven't found anything there. Even checking Ellis Island, I can't be sure I found them. I know there are Piech surnames in Poland, Germany and Austria.

Stanislaus was born in 1863 and came to Chicago with Mary (Wasilewski) who I'm pretty sure was his 2nd wife. She was about 20 yrs younger. There were 2 children with them, Andrej and Maryana Piech. They would have been too old to be Mary's children. Are those familiar names in your family?
How wonderful that you were able to go to Poland! Did you work with a researcher there or did you do it on your own?
Also was wondering if there is a library in Chicago that has archives that are helpful? I sent for Stanislaus's naturalization papers but very little info there.

Those names aren't familiar to me.
Our trip to Poland was a dream come true; I have wanted to travel there since my high school days.

We did have a very knowledgeable driver who spoke English and took us to villages of interest, churches and cemeteries. I found my great grandpa's grave and those of other family members.

Have you gone through familysearch.org? They link you to Ellis Island and other valuable sites. There are many resources in Chicago. I joined PGSA (Polish Genealogical Society of America) and they also have a website with info about periodic meetings. Many Poles joined fraternal organizations like the PNA and PRCUA and they also have resources.

Happy Hunting!

Hello Jacek,
Wojciech would be my great grandfather's oldest brother. However, he was from Chotowa. I'm not sure how far Lakta Gorna is from Chotowa. I wonder if perhaps they were cousins. Do you still live in Poland? We were lucky enough to visit Poland a couple of years ago and found the family property. What a beautiful country!
