Hi Liz,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you; I have been out for a couple of weeks with the flu, then got busy catching up!

I am not familiar with a Charles Piantanida. However, you mention that he came from Torino moved to Philadelphia. My ancestors did the same thing, around 1890. What year did Charles move here, do you know?

My personal e-mail addy is apiantan@co.bingham.id.us

Ciao ~

Andy, if you are still reading this board, do your Piantanida family trees extend to the West Coast?

My great-grandmother's name was Teresa Piantanida Bottini. She was born in Lonate Pozzolo, Varese Province, Lombardia. She came to the U.S. in 1905 (just found her record on the Ellis Island site) and went to join her husband (my g-grandfather) in El Cerrito in the East S.F. Bay area. Several of her brothers came over too.

I still have living Piantanida relatives in Lonate Pozzolo and I have been over to Italy to visit them twice now. I am in the process of writing to my cousin, Maria Grazia, to see if she can obtain copies of birth, marriage and death records for me in Lonate for the relatives I have tracked down so far.

As a kid in the 1950s, I played schoolyard basketball with Virgil Piantanida in Hudson County, NJ. He had an older brother named Nick who achieved some fame. Nick explored Angel's Falls in Venezuela with a Marine Corps buddy. Later he raised cobras and extracted their venom to sell to pharmaceutical companies. Nick also was a terrific basketball player. Finally, he attempted to set a high altitude record in a baloon, and died when parachuting to earth. (I think that a web site documents this.) These Piantanidas lived in North Bergen (Hudson County), NJ. I'm not a relative and have no more information.
