Rebecca (Rifka) (nee Slivka) Pianko, born 1857, died in 20s NY Mount Judah Cemetery, NY, married Isador Pianko, (he died in Europe, as their youngest child was named Isador too, and the kids wrote father's name as "Isador" on their applications for Social Security), so he must have died during Rebecca's pregnancy. The other children were: Chayah (married-Grodzitsky), Adolph, Morris, Nathan, and Isador. Morris is at Mount Hebron. Chayah is at Mount Lebanon. E-mail me if this sounds like your family. I know all of the cemetery locations for this bunch as well. Thanks!

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention where the "Panken" comes in. When these siblings traveled to the United States, their last names were changed to Panken. At Mount Judah Cemetery, Rebecca's headstone says "Rebecca Pianko", but in the cemetery records she is listed as Rebecca Panken.

Thanks again,
Sara

I was just surfing the web in search of my uncle Morris Slivka and your "link" came up. My aunt is Rivka Slivka. My father told me that his uncle immigrated to the US around the turn of the century and that the family had lost contact with him. Are we related???????

(if we owe you any money....don't reply....just a galicianer joke)

While I'm not sure if the Ryfka I am related to had a brother Morris, it's possible. This Ryfka would have been born in about 1856. I've found this record on JewishGen.org. She was born in Ciechanowiec, and on her birth record she is actually listed as Ryfka SLIWKA.

I have located all of Ryfka's children on the new EllisIslandRecords.org database, but I have no luck finding Ryfka. [This is strange because since her husband died in Europe in 1893, so she would have come here after that, putting her arrival in the right year-range for it to be online (they only did arrivals 1892-1924 online)].

Anyway, do you know if your Ryfka married a Srul ("Isador", possibly) Pianko/Pianka? This Srul died in 1893, the same year as his son Isador (Hebrew name Srul) was born.

What year were you born, and would Ryfka ("Rebecca") be an aunt or great-aunt? Thanks for replying to my post, I hope we can figure this out!

Nice to meet you!

My surname was originally "sliwka". My father changed it to Slivka because the "w" is difficult to pronounce. My aunt is alive and well and is actually named Rivka. However my uncle Morris, her brother passed away recently. Where our connection begins or ends(if there is one) is still a mystery. My father's family is from southern Poland (the town of Dombrowa, province of Zaglembie)

We may be related somewhere else on the Slivka tree, but this Ryfka would (obviously) be waayyy too old to still be living. But it was a shot.

Hello Sara,

I am researching my grandparents who are all from Poland, and most probably Ciechanowiec, or maybe Ciechanow. My g-grandfather was Simon Isha Pianko. He had at least a brother or sister, but their name is unknown. Simon Isha Pianko married Cecile Tillie Vinovich and had Ida, Tillie b. 1889, Frieda (Frances - my grandmother) b. 1890, Abraham b. 1900, and Morris b. 1908. Simon's brother or sister married unknown and had Ida, Jenny, Eva, Abe, Louis, Jeanette, Esther, and Lillian* b. 1913.

Cecile Tillie Vinovich (my g-grandmother on my mom's mom side) had a brother Samuel Vinovich (my g-grandfather on my mom's dad's side). Samuel Vinovich married Nasha (Edna) Vopniltski d. 1925 and had Moshe, Louis, and Max (my grandfather).

Simon Pianko's daughter Ida was killed in the Holocaust with her husband and sons. Tillie married Samuel Kozloff, Frances married Max Vinovich (my grandparents), Abe never got married, and Morris married Lillian Pianko*, his first cousin.

From what I have been told, my grandmother Frances Pianko was born 19 April 1890, and she and her family were either from Bialystok or Ciechanowiec. My grandfather Max Vinovich was born 16 March 1887 in Lomza, Russia-Poland.

Please email me at mark.rosenblum@juno.com if you feel that you can you help me at all with any of this?

Thank you!

Laurie -- I saw your posting about Pancoe/Pianko. I know your family -- in fact, I'm a cousin. Your grandmother must have been Florence Pancoe Kamen. It has been about 25 years since I was working on the Pancoe family tree. Your great grandfather, William Jack Pancoe, was a cousin of my grandfather's, Sam Pivovitz. Does the name Pivovitz ring a bell? Ask some of the other Pancoes and they'll recognize the name. Anyhow, I would love to share notes with you. I've never left a message on a message board -- hope this goes through OK. My email: russ.pierce@cox.net. Hope to hear from you. -- Russ Pierce
