Joseph Phythian was born 20 Nov 1849 in Lancashire, U.K. He married Elizabeth Gregson on 03 Jun 1867 at Bold, St Helens, U.K. Elizabeth died on 12 Apr 1901.
Joseph left the UK in 1905 to visit his sister, Mary, in New London. By this time Mary had married John George Skipworth and it is a family belief the couple emigrated to the USA in 1895-1896. I can find no trace of their passage to the USA as yet, or under the name Mary travelled - as their marriage date is unknown she could still have been Mary Phythian.
Ellis Island records the following information:-
Joseph Phythian, arrived USA November 5th, 1905 on the 'Etruria' out of Liverpool, Lancs, UK, with his daughter, Elizabeth (sailed October 28th 1905).
Manifest - Resident of St Helens, age 54, male, widower, occupation Blacksmith, can read-No, final destination New London, Connecticut, passage paid by sister, had $200 on person.
Destination - sister - Mrs Skipworth, 15 Mountain Avenue, New London, Connecticut.
Hid daughter Elzabeth's passage included the comment - 'had physical handicap - spinal curvature through accident', and she is believed to have died whilst in New London in December 1912.
It is further believed that Joseph returned to the UK after the death of his daughter.
I am trying to get a better picture of the Skipworth family as no other information is known. Any children or descendants over there? Did Joseph return? I have been unable to track the family on any census.
