Hattie Mae Mills Phythian
Does anyone reading this board have a relative named Hattie Mae Mills Phythian? I am researching my family name, Bohannon. Hattie Mae had corresponded with my father about 16-20 years ago concerning the Mills and Bohannon family connections in Tennessee in the 1850's or 1860's. The letter she wrote to my dad has been lost, and I'm trying to reconstruct the information she provided.

Re: Hattie Mae Mills Phythian
Kay,
It was great to hear from you. I wrote you a separate e-mail with details of my family connections to your husband's great grandmother. It looks like your husband and I have the same great-great grandparents, Thomas William Bohannon and Sarah Jane Quarles.
I would be very interested in any information you could provide about James Curtis (Bohannon) Mills, his siblings, or his parents.
Please write back. Joe

Re: Hattie Mae Mills Phythian
I was so excited to get your e-mail!
This is the info I have from Hattie. There are a couple of things that are a little different, but it all fits pretty well.
James Curtis Mills b. 27 Sep 1861(don't know why the difference 20th???) Cooksville, Putman, TN m 13 Aug 1886 Witchita Falls, , Texas d. 12 Feb 1934
Sarah Louise (Lulu) Helm b 7 Mar 1871 , Morgan, Alabama d. 28 Jan 1943 Dumas, Moore, Texas
I have all their kids on another list. I haven't taken time to find it yet, I just wanted to get this to you for now. And I'll get you more later. Sarah Jane Qualls(Quarles) died when Jim was 4 yrs old. He went to live with his half-sister, Martha and her husband Tom Mills(John???) Crawford stayed with his father and half brothers. His father died 2 yrs later. I'm not sure where Crawford went from there.
James Curtis Mills purchased the first pair of boots from The Justin Boot Company. they were for his wedding to Sarah. Jim got sick and they moved to Dumas, Moore, Texas. He died of stomach cancer 12 Feb 1934. They say Lulu died of grief. She lost her reason to live when Jim died. She lived nine lonely years before dying 28 Jan 1943.
Johnny Virgil b 27 Nov 1888 Jim bought a farm on the Red River, near Altus, Oklahoma and they moved there before William Thomas was born, 27 Sep 1890. James Oscar b 10 Jan 1892 Dora b Jul 1897 Hattie Mae b 3 Jun 1904
Here is some info to start with. I'll try to get the rest together to compare notes. More later. Thanks, Kay

Re: Hattie Mae Mills Phythian
Thanks for writing. You provided some new information that really adds to my understanding of my family! I had only guessed that Sarah Quarles must have died when the children were young and that Thomas William Bohannon must have also died when they were young. Do you have dates of death or any other information about the parents of Crawford and James Curtis?
I have researched the Bohannon and Quarles families back a number of generations. No primary sources, but the information seems to be accurate. I can provide what I have if you are interested. For now, you might like to see the tombstones of Thomas William's parents - John Bohannon and Sarah Pryor. I found them at the Campbell Bohannon Cemetery east of Cookeville, TN. These photos are posted on findagrave.com. Last summer, I also found the Quarles Cemetery and located the tombstones of Sarah Jane's parents and grandparents. I have not posted those yet, but plan to get to it one of these days.
I'll send more info later. Joe
