We have formed a Phy DNA project at www.FamilyTreeDNA.com. Search under PHY and click the join button, if you have already been tested. Phy is a fairly unusual name. Is it a shortened version of a longer name like Physick, Phimister or Phyland? Is it German? Is it Irish, Scottish, Sicilian or Andalusian? Most of us have had little success in discovering the origin of our Phy surname. If your research has left you with lots of questions, perhaps DNA testing would help. We are inviting any male with the surname Phy or any variation, i.e., Fy, Phie, MacPhie, MacFie, etc. to join our surname DNA project. If you are female, perhaps a father, brother, uncle, or cousin could take the test.

Several Phys appeared in North Carolina in the mid-1750s and migrated sometime before 1800 to Tennessee (around present day Putnam County) and then spread west to – Missouri, Kansas, Oregon, Arizona, and California. Another Phy researcher has just received her uncle’s DNA results, and has her Phy genealogy back to Pennsylvania and then back to Germany around the time of the American Revolution! Several Phys came into New York around 1740. We would like to know if our Phy ancestors have similar DNA to your Phy ancestors. This can be a great opportunity to further our research. Remember that the more people who take the test, the more opportunities we have to find a match.

If you have any questions, email me.
Sincerely,
Daniela Moneta

Hello ther I would appreciate an up date of your findings. I come from Liverpool, England where my father worked on the river mersey,as did his 6 brothers. His father was a commador of the Alexandra Towing company, aswas tradition then they signed up their sons to follow in their foot steps. We never knew our grandfather nor where he came from. I do know that there are a lot more Physick in the south of England.
I expect the connection with New York could be migratory form England.

Your sincereley Gill Dorey

Dear Gillian,
I don't think we have a lot of Physicks in America. Some came over in the 1690s and settled in the state of Virginia. In the 1800s some came from Lancashire and settled in the eastern part of the U.S. I would love to know of my Phys were originally Physicks. Have you considered have a DNA test?
Daniela

Phylip or Philip might be a clue. Of course the more Phy males that have DNA analysis the better. Phylips has British Isles connections. The current Phys proven by DNA are Germanic.
