Thomas Joseph Phoenix born 1868 immigrated to Canada the Chicago
I'm researching my great grandfather Thomas Joseph Phoenix who according to US 1900 census info was born in June 1868 in England. Family lore has that he immigrated from England to Canada with his parents and then to Chicago Illinois in 1886. I'm not sure what his parents names are or if they came to the US too. He married Mary Ellen Smith in Chicago Feb 27 1889 and became a naturalized citizen in 1900. By 1920 he and his family moved to Denver Colorado because he is there for the 1920 census.
I'd apprecaite any info or assitance on tracing his parents/siblings etc.
Thanks, Joan Phoenix LaRose

Hi Joan. You were looking for information on James Phoenix, who is Thomas Joseph's brother. He was the only sibling to stay in England. He is my great grandfather. I have information if you would like to hear any more. Best wishes. Chris Bent

Yes I'm very interested in more information about James especially to fill in that part of my tree. Are his descendants still in England?
Also, do you know anything about his grandparents on his father William's side. His grandfather was possibly also named James?

Re: Thomas Joseph Phoenix born 1868 immigrated to Canada the Chicago
James Phoenix's descendants are very much in England and mostly around Liverpool, which is common for this element of my family. James married Eliza Ann McCormack and had one child Frederick, my grandfather. Sadly James died when he was only 39 and Eliza remarried (John Jenkins). Frederick married Mary Jane Burns from Liverpool and they had 5 children - Marie, Fred, Jim, William and Margaret (my mother). Only my Mother survives and she is 92 this year. William had 5 children (3 boys and 2 girls - the same as Fred & Mary Jane!). Margaret married John Welton Bent and had 3 children - myself, Pauline and Anthony. We live in Warrington and our cousins are mostly in Liverpool. My Grandfather Fred and we think James were very big Everton Football Club supporters. They had shares in the club in the early 1900's. We have all carried this passion on and attend all the home matches - keeping the spirit of our forefathers alive!I have just started my research and have not gone beyond William charles yet. Will keep you posted with any information I get. Where do you fit into the tree? Best wishes. Chris.

Re: Thomas Joseph Phoenix born 1868 immigrated to Canada the Chicago
Thanks for the wonderful information - I'll be adding it to my tree soon. My great grandfather was Thomas Joseph Phoenix. He and his wife Mary Ellen "Polly' Smith had 3 children: William David, Joseph Thomas, and Margaret. Joseph is my grandfather. Joseph had 2 sons: Lucien Thomas and Joseph Thomas Jr "Tom". Lucien was my dad and he passed away in 2011. Lucien married Jane Ann Whitney and had 5 children - Jeri, James "Jim", Joan (me), Kathleen, and Paul. Dad was an Air Force pilot for 21 years so we lived in many states but his last assignment was in the Phoenix, AZ area and he resided here until his death. It's interesting being a "Phoenix" in Phoenix, AZ area. I married Thomas "Tom" William LaRose (of New Orleans) and have 2 sons: Stephen and Ryan. We live in Mesa, AZ which is in the Phoenix metro area. Unlike your side of the family, mine were nomads. Thomas Joseph immigrated on from Canada to Chicago, Illinois where his sister Mary Leticia lived. They are the only two siblings to have gone on to the US from Canada. Thomas went from Chicago to Denver, Colorado and that's where he lived the longest. My grandfather Joseph went to California with the oil industry and then to Kansas during their oil boom. Dad was born in California but raised in Kansas. He joined the Air Force and we were born in many states from Alaska to Florida. My family tree is public so you can see much of this documented there. Sylvi Galli helped a lot with the Canadian part of the family and I met a descendent of Mary Leticia Phoenix who winters here in the Phoenix area who gave me info on their branch. I believe William Charles Phoenix Jr also stayed in England but do not have much info on that sibling of Thomas and James.
I love the Everton football connection. We are huge soccer fans. My son was captain of his high school team and played club until college. He also played a year in college and now coaches youth soccer. We get the soccer channel on cable so we can watch all the games. I think we'll have to be Everton fans now.

Re: Thomas Joseph Phoenix born 1868 immigrated to Canada the Chicago
This is really interesting Joan. Thanks so much. I have looked at your tree and gained much information. The photos are great. In particular, Thomas Joseph looks so like my uncles (it's the ears!!). Please have a look at my Bent/Phoenix tree. You will see James Phoenix & Eliza Ann McCormick's marriage certificate - note my corrected spelling of McCormick. There is a wonderful picture of Fred's marriage in 1910 and of his young family. My mother Margaret is sitting on her Mum's knee. Sadly her Mum (Mary Jane Burns)died when she was only 9 of TB. The family were brought up by Fred with the help of a much loved housekeeper called Josie. We have heard so many stories of them heading to Goodison Park as a family in the 1930's to watch Dixie Dean (football's greatest star in the 20's and 30's). There is much evidence that the Phoenix family of James was heavily involved in the cotton trade. This was big business in the 1800's in Lancashire. By the way, we have a Joan Phoenix in England too! One of Fred's sons (William) had 5 children - Eileen, Joan, David, Stephen & Peter. She still lives in Liverpool. Sadly Steve died last year of cancer - the first loss of my generation. I read with interest your Dad's war experience. You must be very proud. Sorry to hear of his recent passing. My grandfather Harold Bent was gassed in france in WW1 and my father John Welton Bent drove a Sherman Tank in the Irish Guards in WW2. I do think you living in Phoenix is very amusing! Yesterday was a bit spooky. When I received your email, I was in Liverpool looking at the bronze statue on the waterfront celebrating all the families in the 1800's who left to cross the Atlantic to make a better life. If you send me your email address I will send a photo to you. Best regards. Chris.
