I am researching the phegan family history (have been doing since 1975). Have recently taken it up again. Can you advise information re Andrew Phegan, how he arrived in Australia. I have most if not all other information.
Interested in learning about the book, you are proposing to publish. We may need to get together with our info. There is a photograph of Minnie Phegan (Richard's wife) in the Forster Historical Society story BUT I believe the photo is not of her but of someone else in the family.
I have correspondence from Mrs. Jan Booth from many years ago.
Mary Ryan (nee Phegan).

Re: phegan family history
have just started researching the family history and have come across this site. The info. i have is that richard,s wife was maryann ( maybe Minnie as a pet name) born 1837. I am the -great great great grand daughter of this couple through the line of Herbert henry and Elizabeth Walsh. If richard was born in 1834 could the Andrew mentioned in other posts born in 1832 be his brother? Who were richard's parents?Have searched convict lists for the 4 phegan brothers supposed to have been sent to Tasmania but can't find them. Does anyone know for sure if their name changed from another surname . Grateful for any info. at all.

Re: phegan family history
Hi Mary, you say in one of your messages that the phegans were Pegan or Pagan before coming to Australia. How did you know that and where would I need to look then to find my Phegan ancestors if i have no idea where they came from or when or if they changed their name. Am hoping to find the parents of Richard Phegan born (where ?) in 1834. Thanks for any info you might be able to provide. Louise Player(nee Phegan

Re: phegan family history
Hi Ben, Sorry but don't have any info. on William-when was he born and where. My ancestor was Richard Phegan born in Tas. in 1834 to Andrew Peagan and Margaret nee Delaney. They had 4 sons so maybe William descended from one of them -don't know about them dying on the way to Tas. though unless they had travelled away and were returning. Have you tried birth death and marriage records-you sometimes get parent names from those-I'll look on NSW site for you > Louise

Re: phegan family history
Louise, My mother-in-law's maiden name was Phegan. She was a descendant of Andrew Barnabas Phegan born in Hobart 16 Dec 1838. Have you seen the 'Great Lakes Historical Society' website. If you go to their contents page you will find an article there on 'Richard Phegan - An Irish Influence' which may be of interest to you!

Re: phegan family history
Hi all, Thank you for your posts. I'm now sure that Andrew Phegan from Kilmannon/Kilkenny is my Great Great Great Great Grandfather. My mothers father and mother were brought up in Balmain, Sydney and tracking back all of the connections, add up through Richard Michael Phegan and Mary Ann (Minnie) Lowe from Hobart, Tasmania.
