Hi John?
I'm a descendant of Richard Michael Phegan. He would be my GGG grandfather on my mothers side.
From what I can find he had three sons, Richard Andrew Phegan, Herbert Henry Phegan and Albert Phegan.

Richard Andrew had 2 sons, Richard Francis and George Gladstone. All from the Balmain era.
George Gladstone had 2 sons, Ernest Wakefield and John Andrew.
John Andrew Phegan was my grandfather and I knew him well until his death in the late 90's. I have some pictures that my mother has just given me to scan. They look like they could be back in the 20's or 30's? We are not sure who they are so if you are interested we might be able to correspond and share some more snippets.

OK forget last message as I didn't check my notes.
My research has found this.
Richard Michael Phegan and Mary Ann "Minnie" Lowe had possibly 9 kids.

Emma B. Phegan born: ? died:1879 Balmain
Ernest F. Phegan born: ? died:1906 Sydney
Richard Andrew Phegan born:1863 Balmain died:1933 Newtown
John Joseph Phegan born:1864 Balmain died:1925 Burwood
John J Phegan born:1867 Balmain died:
George William Phegan born:1868 Balmain died:1957 Parramatta
Richard Phegan born:1872 Port St died:
Herbert Henry Phegan born:1873 Port St died:1940 Nth Sydney
Albert Phegan born:1876 Port St died:1915 St.Leonard
Minnie Phegan born:1878 Port St died:1950 WaggaWagga

So Emma B. and Ernest F. I assume were born in Tasmania.
If they were Richard M. and "Minnie"s first two children they could have been born between 1855 and 1862? Only assuming that Mary Ann "Minnie" could have been say 15 yrs. or older when they were born.
There are two dates for the birth of a John Joseph and John J. Phegan 1864 and 1867 respectively. John J. no death date that I can find. The NSW BDM registration records show 2627/1867 and 2629/1864 which seems funny if it was consecutive listing? George William was the last born in Balmain and I assume after that around 1869 or 1870 they moved to Forster. The registrations being registered in Port Stephens or the actual births?
So that would be Richard, Herbert, Albert and Minnie born in that mid north coast area Forster.
Richard had a successful shipwright business there until he sold it to another shipwright that he had brought up from Sydney. He then opened and ran a hotel which from some reports may have burnt down? I haven't got that far yet to track down the real story. I have the address and name of the hotel not to hand as I write this. They moved back to Balmain at this point and I'm not to sure about what happened after that other than death dates and some locations/areas. I do have the names of some of the streets and properties owned even a name of a Villa in one street in Balmain that was subdivided at one stage.

Dear Louise,
My mother-in-law, Verona Marie Phegan, was the daughter of Albert Phegan whose parents were Catherine McNamara and Francis Phegan. Francis was the son of Andrew Barnabas Phegan and Catherine O'Loughlin. He was born in Melbourne in 1864 and died in Manly in 1920. He was their only child that survived beyond childhood. His siblings were: Catherine (1860-1860) and Andrew (1861-1862). Francis was only four years old when his father died from tuberculosis in the infectious diseases hospital in Melbourne. Hope this is of some interest.

Thanks for that info.-I knew of Catherine and Andrew but not of Francis so couldnt understand how that line survived.
How many children did Francis and Catherine have ? Did they remain in Melbourne.Did they come to Melbourne because Andrew was sick originally? Sorry to ask so many questions but this is all new info for me. very exciting.

Dear Louise,
I don't know why Andrew & Catherine went to Melbourne. It appears (from Catherine's death certificate)that she returned to Sydney, with Francis & Elizabeth, not long after Andrew's death. I forgot to mention Elizabeth b. 1867 in Melbourne.
Francis married Catherine McNamara in 1884 and had three children: Albert Joseph b.1885; Mildred Irene b.1888; Veronica Mary b.1890. Albert married Mary Size in 1911 and had three daughters: Verona Marie b.1911; Miriam Irene b.1912; Beatrice Mary b.1913. Verona Marie is my husband's mother, she died in 2000.
Albert enlisted in the Army during the 1st World War and fought at Gallipoli and Egypt. He was discharged in Dec. 1917, due to health problems from which he never fully recovered, and as a result, died in Dec. 1918. With Albert's death and no sons to carry on the name, that branch of the Phegan Family has come to an end!
I hope this fills in some gaps for you. By the way, which of the Phegans are you descended from?
Regards, Maureen

Thankyou maureen for the info. Didn't know any of that info. Did Elizabeth marry and have children?
I am descended from Andrew Barnabas' older brother(there were 4 boys ) Richard. He had about 7 or 8 sons and 1 daughter.
His 6th (or so,I'm writing this from memory)son was Herbert Henry who had 8 children. His eldest son James Martin was my grandfather,I'm the daughter of his 3rd son Gerard.. As you can see there were a multitude of sons . However, from the 4 sons of my grandfather there were only 3 grandsons and so far only 1 ggrandson so looks like the name may shortly die out in this line too.
