I found in the United States Census Books of 1870 and 1880 that Thomas Phears was in Washington County, Texas but when I went to look at the microfilm I couldn't find him. He was suppose to be on page 125 of the Washington county, Texas 1870 census and page 229 of the 1880 Washington County, Texas census. I would like to know the name of his wife and children.

I know his daughter Nannie was married John Henry Ernest Futterrer in Hamilton County Texas July 14, 1891.

I'd like to learn more about the Phears.

Surnames: Phears
1870 Washington County, Texas Pct 4 (around the Burton, Texas area) p93 lines 32-38

1870 Census lists Phears, Thomas age 38 farmer from MO.
Sarah J. age 38 keeping house from MO.
John 18 farmer TX
Thomas Jr. 16 TX
Martha 15 TX
Charles 8 TX
Nannie 6 TX

This page number would be the pre-printed page number (not the handwritten number) that would be at the top corner of each page.

Thomas was the second husband of Sarah Jane Layne (dob about 1832 in Missouri). She was first married to William Phears, brother of Thomas. William is the father of William Thomas, John Pleas, and Martha Phears. Thomas is the father of Charles Robert and Nannie Phears.

Please email me if you have any more questions or would like to discuss this family further.

Yes, this is the family....
Absalom Phears d.o.b. Aug 9, 1797
Jane Blankenship, wife dob Mar 12, 1806
William 1825
Pleasant 1828-1862 died of measles
Thomas 1830
Nancy 1833
McDonald March 01, 1835-December 04, 1895
Absalom H. January 22, 1837-November 23, 1918
James M. 1838
Sallie E. (sometimes listed as Sarah, however her headstone reads Sallie) February 12, 1841 - April 1872
Virginia 1843
Valera 1846

William died sometime after about 1855 and Thomas married Sarah on February 12, 1859 in Washington County. William's children with Sarah are John Pleas, William Thomas, and Martha. Thomas' children with Sarah are Anna, Charles Robert, and Nannie. Anna was found on a census in 1860 listed as being 11 months old, but not on any subsequent census records, so she probably died as a child.

I also know that Absalom's parents are Pleasant Phears (1773-1820) and Isabell Childress (unk.-October 07, 1826), but that's as far back as anyone has reliably.

Please understand that this is a work in progress, and I am constantly getting updates and finding errors and making changes. I hope this gives you a good head start on your research!
