To answer your question, my feelings are, My Phalen great grandfather Michael Phalen had his name spelled three different ways on his marriage license. I assume they could not read or write as his will was signed with an X. He was born in Queen's county, Ireland and came to Fulton county, Ill about 1850 where he married, had three children, and died in 1885. Hope this is of some help. Esther Phalen Shields.

In answer to your question, it depends on how the name is pronounced and how the person writing the name down heard it said. I have seen my ancestors' name spelled, Phelan, Phalen,Palin, Phalon, Phalin,Felin, etc........ Doesn't really matter how it is spelled.
My German Roederer's had their name spelled Roederer, Reederer, Roderer, Roder, Raderer. It's all the same family from a small area in the Black Forest.
