Thanks for this reply. New documents to hand indicate you are almost certainly right and the sum paid over was between two and twenty thousand - still a great deal of money then. An amusing side story goes that Phayre was summonsed before the King, for consideration of a pardon. He was asked to swear fealty to the King and to declare him as head of the Church. Phayre replied that he would give his allegiance to the King for ever, but that God was the true head. The Duke of Ormonde, a patron of Phayre, agreed that he too would have difficulty with that demand. The King laughed and agreed to pardon Phayre.
