I'M TRYING TO FIND THE PARENTS OF A GEORGE POST/PFOST WHO WAS BORN IN GERMANY,APRIL 18,1770 AND DIED IN WEST VIRGINIA JULY 16,1849. WE BELIEVE IT WAS EITHER A VALENTINE PFOST OR AN ABRAHAM PFOST, BOTH FRM GERMANY. WE KNOW THAT VALENTINE MARRIED A BARBARA DEVLIN BUT WE BELIEVE THAT HE MAY HAVE HAD A FIRST WIFE IN GERMANY WHO THE CHILDREN JACOB, GEORGE AND MARY PFOST BELONG TO. GEORGE MARRIED A ELIZABETH PETERSON/PATTERSON AROUND1792.WE HAVE A DESCENDENCY LIST BUT WE ARE STUCK ON THE ANCESTRY. THANKS FOR ANY INFO.

Thanks for your response. I actually have the list of children of Barbara Devlin and Valentine Post. We think that there is a possibility that Valentine may have had a first wife in Germany who bore him three children, a Jacob, George and a Mary. According to DP's book these three came to live with him for a short period. Jacob married a Barbara Strader, and Mary married John Strader(brother and sister) George married an Elizabeth Peterson. resided for a time in Hardy County, West Virginia, as did Valentine and Barbara. Then some of them moved on to Ohio and west fropm there. We are descendents of George and Elizabeth Pfost and can trace our line forward from that but are stuck going backward. We would love to know any info about Valentine prior to his marriage to Barbara Devlin and coming here to America. Do you know if anyone has the info or where to begin looking for it?? Thanks again for your response, Heidi

If you aquired any information about Valentine Pfost/Post's first wife I would love to know. I am a descendent of Jacob. But was lead to believe he was the son of Barbara. But after reading your post it makes sense that he was the son of his first wife. I would also love any info on Valentine and when he came over and how. Thanks.

amela, since writing that query in 2002 I have had many people contact me with information that Valentine Pfost and Barbasra Strader are the parents of , George, Jacob and Mary. But when I have asked if they have any Proof by way of birth or death certificates I usually have not heard from them again to verify where their information came from. The ones that have responded usually have information about the other children of Valentines' ( the ones that are Barbara Straders descendents) but I still am inclined to think that if George, Jacob and Mary are Valentines children the came from a first marriage in Germany or he is an Uncle. In short I am still looking. There is a lot of information on Ancestry.com about Valentine and there is a book about Valentine that a DorisJean ost Poinsett has put out I believe it is called "An Ancestoral Genealogy of the Pfost Family" It seems tbe the book to read if you want to know about Valentine though most of the information that I copied from it was concerning his life after he arrived in America. I have a lot of corresponences from ancestors of Valentines other children I would be happy to share with you Let me know what you would like. Thanks Heidi

It just occured to me as I was reveiwing the message board that you had given me the information that you are a direct descendent of Valentine/ Barbara and Mary Pfost and John Strader. Do you have Mary listed as The oldest child in that family? The list of Valentine/Barbara's children that I have lists Abraham.1773,Isaac,'75,Susanna,'77Glori,'79,Martin,'81,Barbara,'83 and Elizabeth,1785. Would you share the list ofchildren that you have, also do you know where and when Valentine was born? Thanks Heidi

This is the first communication board I have seen on the name Pfost in a long time. This reply is to older messages, but I would like to add the following information.

I have researched the Pfost family over the last several years and very interestingly found the following information. But first please read this story.

My mother's father was John William Pfost. He was the son of Erastus Pfost and Pearl Ethel Hughes of Missouri and born Sept. 30, 1905. Erastus was the last son of Allen Pfost and Caroline Harrison, both born in West Virginia. There were 8 children. Erastus had a first marraige, who which was born two daughters, Rachel J. Pfost and Hazel E. Pfost.

John grew up in Colorado Springs, CO. He married my grandmother, Ione Woodson Cooper and there were two daughters born, Ione Pfost and Sue Ellen Pfost. Ione was my mother. From my mother's story, John abandoned the family when she was two years old. There was another marriage and he moved out of state, possibly to Nebraska. From there he abandoned THAT family and his wife gave the name of their son, John Darwin Pepper, who was born Pfost, the surname, "Pepper," on his birth certificate.

The next information I found about John was he was living in San Luis Obispo, California, where there were many Pfosts residing. He joined the Navy in WWII and was in the SeaBees in the South Pacific. Skip to 1966 where he was living in a motel in San Luis Obispo and where he died of fatty liver disease. When I contacted the funeral home who handled the services, they said that his son handled the expenses. I never knew he had ANOTHER family.

I think it is interesting that in doing genealogy research one can 'flesh out' what looks like rather drab and uninteresting lives until they become fascinating people. And John was. He was extremely handsome. My aunt describes him as a "cheerleader." He was popular, funny, and loved a party. I recently met his other grandson, from the family, Pepper, and looking into his eyes, was like looking into my grandfather's eyes.

Maybe there are Pfosts and Peppers out there who have no idea about their pasts. Here is some help.

Judith, thanks for the reply, your story of your father is very interesting, It is curious to me that many of the Pfost came west from West Virginia via Colorado, my father in law, who was William Allsworth Post grew up there!I have talked to others descending from the Post line and they all seem to have come through Colorado?? Actually tspost is me so much of the questioning you sent me were things I had posted on the ancestry board, but I had not read all of the responses so thanks, for sending the info. I am still hoping to find someone who has done some research on Valentine prior to his coming to America, so I am still looking there. It was also interesting to have you talk about looking into your step brothers eyes and seeing your grandfather? I was on facebook for the first time and a picture of a John Pfost from California came up on the screen, it lookied as if I was looking at a picture of my brother in law Bill Post in Utah. the resemblance was remarkable. Interesting, also, if you are interestested there is a fellow named Jaye Drummond that is doing some DNA testing to try to establish the POST/PFOST line
(George,Jacob, and Mary vs. Valentine)If you would be interested in any information there or in taking part in the test let me know and I will get you connected with Jaye. It was a greak spark to hear from you, thanks, Heidi
