My great, great, great grandfather Edward H. Green was married twice. His first wife was Sarah Parsons whom he married on 9/14/1826. They had several children including Leonard E. Green who was born about 1826/27.

Edward H. Green remarried after his first wife died. The second wife was Clora Koontz Pfost, the widow of Francis Marion Pfost. She had a daughter named Matilda Pfost and she and Edward had a son named James F. Green. According to one source of info Clora, Matilda, and James were murdered by a man named John F. Morgan on 11/3/1897. I'm sure that there were articles in papers, etc about the murder. Is anyone aware of information on this family. The father of Edward was killed in 1813 in a tragic accident when a large rock fell on him and a hunting companion as they sleep in a camp near Eighteen mile Creek in WV( area is now in Putman Co. I believe). The father's name was Charles Green, his son Edward was age 10 at the time and was with his father when the accident occurred. Would really appreciate it if anyone could provide additional information on these events, I thought articles might give information on other members of Edwards family as well. Thanks, Kay Nixon

Thanks so much, I found a great deal out about my family from the article that you directed me to. What a terrible frightening event for that family and the neighbors to go through. I had known nothing about this until recently when a cousin mentioned that she had found some reference to it, but was still looking for more information. I will pass on the site to her so she can use it to locate other information since she lives in WV, but I am far away. Thank you again, Kay Nixon

Hi John, so nice to hear from you! I discovered that the article mentioned in one of the replies to my message was apparently a text version of the book. Don't know if it was complete or not but covered the events of the murder and the trial pretty well. Does the book have any pictures of the family (Pfost-Green) in it? I wondered if it might have pictures of Ned Green, his wife, or any of his children or their children, or the home that they lived in. My great Grandmother was a niece to the young man killed by Morgan. What a tragedy for that family. Does the book mention anything about Morgan's wife? I found a bit in a WV Heritage book (volume 12 page 2483-2488) about it, didn't seem very accurate, but mentioned wife's father as Hiram Hall. My Grandfather is Andrew Jackson Hall of Braxton Co, so have often wondered if there was a connection between him and the family of the wife at some time in the past. I live in MT, my cousin in WV was never able to find a copy of the book, so perhaps you could answer some of our questions about the pictures, etc. Thanks so much for responding to my posting. Did your Grandfather suffer a great deal over the horrible mess that must have been for the children to go through? I've often thought of poor Alice, having to live with the pain of her head injury and with the memories of what happened that morning, I'm sure it made a large change in all the lives. Would love to hear more from you, my email address is kanix@libby.org if you would like to email directly to me. I have had some trouble with my server lately, if that address doesn't work, use kanix@mac.com Thanks again! Kay Nixon

Dear Mr. Pfost...
Although I am adopted, I found my biological family at age 27. I am 50 now, and most of my family has died. They were not terribly good historians, but I do recall hearing about these family murders. I was born in W.Va, and learned later in my life that my real family was practically in the same town with me...mostly Dunbar, W. Va.
My Fathers' name was Jewel Chester Pfost, and he died in Wyoming many years ago, but had been residing in Fla. He had a brother Richard, who also resided in Fla, also deceased. I had two wonderful brothers, Stephen and Richard Pfost, who have also died; both were born in W.Va, moved to Fla in adulthood. My Dads' Mom was named Oma, and I am pretty sure her maiden name was Darnell.
I have heard the stories about the murders...and I feel ceratin you and I must be related, which is nothing short of a miracle to me. I have struggled with being adopted my entire life, and am always thrilled to think there is another member of my real family.
Please write back ASAP....RdWm@aol.com...and maybe we can talk on the phone....I will be anxiously waiting to hear from you.
Warmly,
Susan Franco-Towell

Kathlen,
Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs has a song about the Last Public Hanging in Wv. I Have this song as an .mp3 and an
mpeg layer 3 wave. It mentions the Green widow and John Morgan was the last public hanging in Wv. I'm sure you and I are related in some way. Ihad never heard of the murders until you joined the McKinney family site, which I also am a member of. Larry Green

Surnames: Pfost, Green,
Hi Larry, really happy to hear from you. I didn't realize anyone on the site was connected so nice to know there was. Were you able to read the account of "The Slaughter of the Pfost-Greene Family" by the link that I posted. I checked it later and discovered that it had been disconnected, though it worked the day I posted it. I have the contents of the book now, both text and pictures. Would be happy to share. How do you think you are connected to Edward Green? I've been unsuccessful in finding any of his descendants outside of my own group and one who was descended from Leonards youngest son by his second wife. I would love to hear that song. I have words to one of the ballads written about the hanging, but don't know if it is the same as the song that was done by them. My lan email address is kanix@mac.com. Could you email me more about the song and I will find the words of the ballad and send them to you. Thanks so much, nice to find a cousin. Kay Nixon
