Hi Kathy, what a coincidence! I just got a copy of that song this evening from another member of the Green family. Thank you for your info. Are you connected in anyway to the Edward Green family (it was his second wife, his son, and his wife's daughter by her first marriage that were killed). I have the words to a ballad about the hanging too, haven't looked at them for quite a while but believe they are different than what Flatt and Scruggs sang. It was from an article in the "Goldenseal" magazine. Don't recall exactly when they put the article out, but seems like it was in 1991. There were several photos of people involved with the murder (men who found the victims, John Morgan, and others) plus an account by a woman who had been a young girl living next door at the time the murders took place. It was an excellent article. Would love to hear from you if you would like to email me at kanix@mac.com. Thanks again for your calling the song to my attention, my cousin hunted for it for months, amazing that I would get two messages on the same night! Bye for now, Kay Nixon

I've learned a lot since I posted this message. Edward's father was actually John Green according to most records (including one that stated that Edward lost part of his little finger from it being crushed at the time his father was crushed by the boulder). Edward and the other young boy were unable to move the rock (and to lost to find their way for help in the wilderness) so the two men were under it for four days before someone found them, too late to help anyone but the boys. Some more documented accounts seem to indicate that they may have been on Thirteen Mile Creek rather than Eighteen Mile Creek, though both Creeks are in a few miles of each other. Edward's second wife's name was Chloe rather than Clora according to many sources.

There is a book called "The Slaughter of the Pfost-Greene Family of Jackson Co., WV" written by Morrison in 1897 (same year the murders occurred) which gives a very detailed account of events, including the trial of John Morgan (I was thrilled to find a like new copy of it a month ago on Amazon.com) and also a song by Flatt and Scruggs about the hanging of John Morgan as well as a couple of ballads about the event. I would still like to hear of any information about the children of Edward Green. The book mentions the children of Chloe in some detail, but nothing much is said about Edward's children though they would surely have been affected by the whole event since James was their half brother. Edward had died two years before the murders occurred. If any of the descendants of Edward and his wives families contact me I would be happy to share what I've found.

Hi Susan, I wondered if you had ever heard from John Pfost? Do hope you were able to make connections with your family line. I'm related on the Greene side of the murders. I have a copy of the book, includes pictures and would be happy to share info and pictures from it with you if you would like to have them. I never got a reply to my answer to something John posted and I noticed that he hadn't posted anything for a long time so I wondered if he might have lost his computer access and not contacted you either.Anyhow, I'd love to hear from you and wish you the best in finding your family. Are you aware of the MyFamily.com websites for WV? You have to have an invitation to join them since they are private sites, but there are some really good sites for the middle section of the state and the people are like a big family it seems on most of those sites. What county is Dunbar in? I live in MT so not familiar with some areas of WV though I was born there. Anyhow, Braxton,Clay, Roane, Webster, Upshur, Lewis, Harrison, Doddridge, and some more of the counties have active sites with very helpful people. If you are interested in a particular county (some sites cover more than one county too) that I belong to I'd be happy to invite you. You can email me on my lan line at kanix@mac.com

I am currently writing a book about the history of John Ferguson Morgan, the Pfost-Greene murders, the families involved, and the Grasslick/Ripley communities. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone related to those involved re: family stories, journals, memories, etc. My email address is merrileematheny@yahoo.com. I live in a nearby community, my ancestors were related to these families and/or attended the hanging, and I grew up hearing about it. I have a great deal of information re: geneaology that I am including in this history as well and would be happy to trade information.
