Would love to hear from Harold Russell regarding Elizabeth Pewett who married John Russell. I believe I descend from her brother.

Elizabeth Pewett + John Russell
Susan, my info suggests that John and Elizabeth were married in Lunenberg County, VA on 18 Oct, 1837. Moved to Chincoteague,VA. Had 7 children. Does this agree with your data? I have more and would like to pursue, if you agree. Russ

I have not worked on this family for a long time and am a little rusty. Most of the information i have is research done by my mother several years ago. I had to find her "boxes" of information so I would get my facts correct (at least close to correct).
One Joel Pewett and wife Ann (possibly Blackwell) owned land in Lunenburg Co., VA as early as 1767.
They had a son John who may have married 3 times and had children by all 3 wives. Last marriage was to Nancy Crenshaw (who may also have been married once or twice before. She appears to have had Erskine children when she married John. John and Nancy had two children - Joel Blackwell (1814-1889) and Elizabeth (don't know if it was Mary Elizabeth or Elizabeth Ann). My records seem to indicate that they all moved to middle Tennessee (Williamson Co., Maury County and Humphreys Co. sometime in the 1860ies, I believe)
Joel Blackwell Pewett married (1) Emily Radford and had 6 children and (2) to Mary Coleman and had 4 more children.
Joel and Mary's second son - Robert Blackwell Pewett (1865-1932) married Ida Ellen Teas and in 1910 became the parents of my mother, Mary Gladys Pewett.
For some reason the Pewett's have been a difficult line for me to follow; however, i do have lots of information and stories. One story being that some of the Erskines came to Humphreys Co, TN with the Pewetts and was at home helping care for the women and children during the War Between the States and to quote "the Yankees who came through told him he should be in the army and shot him in the face blinding him for the rest of his life." My mother said that her father could remember him.
My grandparents only had two children, my mother being nineteen years younger than her sister. She always felt she was off a whole generation.
Are we talking about the same family? I sure hope so and am anxious to hear from you and would love to share anything I have with you.

Elizabeth Pewett + John Russell
Susy - My intro to Elizabeth I had determined that John Russell was my g-g-grandfather and had married an Elizabeth. The marriage records of Accomack county did not show any.Census records of Accomack county (Chincoteague) for 1850 showed their household.I then ckecked the Virginia Marriage Index, 1740-1850,and found that John J. Russell had married Elizabeth Pewett on 18 October,1837.The original records said that Elizabeth was born in 1810.I question that because the 1850 census record states her age as 30 (born 1820). So there is a stonewall here. I viewed both tombstones @ Redmen's Cemetery in Chincoteague, which list her birth as 1810 and John @ 1812. His death is shown as 17 Sept ,1884. I wrote to Virginia Dept. Health and they have no record of John's death for "83-"84 or "85. My look @ Pewetts was brief, Lunenberg county does show a number them. Do you have any date info for Elizabeth? Russ (\

Hi Harold and Happy New Year.
I believe we have quite a set of unusual circumstances going here.
My records suggest the following: One John Pewett (son of Joel Pewett of Luenenburg Co, VA) . Some of the family moved to Chatham Co, NC at some point. John had several children including two by his last marriage to Nancy Crenshaw - Joel Blackwell Pewett born in 1814 and Mary Elizabeth Pewett born in 1816. Joel Blackwell Pewett married (1st) to Emily Radford and (2nd) to Mary Jane Coleman and Mary Elizabeth Pewett married Johnnie J Russell.
Sometime around 1837/1838 many family members moved to Williamson Co, TN. This included at least John's widow Nancy and some of her Erskine children by a former marriage (or perhaps a relationship), Joel Blackwell Pewett, The Russells, and half brother Robert C Pewett and half sister Tabathia (who may have been married to Alan Johnson). They all settled near each other in the 23rd district of Williamson Co, TN on Spring Creek near the Big Harpeth River.
In 1870 the Joel Blackwell Pewett family, the Coleman family, and the Russell family all came together by ox cart to Humphreys Co, TN. The Russells purchased land and settled in what is still known as Russell Hollow on Tumbling Creek and both Johnnie and Mary Elizabeth (later known at Bettie) are buried in the Larkin Cemetery near where they lived.
These Russells were parents of the following children: Sarah, 1842/ Nancy 1845/ John 1846/ Mary 1849/ Tabatha 1853.
I don't know anything about the rest of their children at the moment, but Tabatha married Sam Grimes and many of their descendents still live in Humphreys Co, TN.
I assume we are not talking about the same Russells but they certainly do have many similarites.
Some where in all the "stuff" I have from my mother's estate is a tin type picture of Johnnie Russell "running" logs down Duck River in Humphreys Co.. He was a tall, dark very handsome man.
Let me know what you think about all of this and if you see anything that connects your Russells with mine.
Anxious to hear-----Susy

Hi Susy and a great 2001 for you! Tanx for the info; I'm impressed with your work. I believe you are correct, in that we are not reffering to the same Russells. The marriage certificate states the Elizabeth was born in 1810, but the 1850 census says 1820. A typical problem in this genealogy. You say that Elizabeth is buried in the Larkin cemetery - my Elizabeth's tombstone is in Redmens cemetery in Chincoteague. I guess I can't be of much help on the Pewetts, but I'll stay alert for any info I may run across. Sorry! Good luck, Russ

Susy, we have talked before about our Curtis connections--now it seems like we have a Pewett connection. Mine are John Russell and Elizabeth Pewett. I would love to hear from you on this. Peg

Hi Suzy,
I'm Harold Russell's son Keith. Together we've been chasing Elizabeth since your last correspondence with not much luck. I regret to inform you that my father passed not long after your latest posts. I know he would want this figured out. :-) I'm still looking I hope you still are.
Your message is very interesting and is convincing that John J. married Elizabeth Pewett and not Sturgis which is here the tree branches according to research.
I would love a copy of the picture of Johnnie running logs. Oh my God. That would be incredible.
What are your thoughts?
BTW, I am now concerting my efforts solely on Elizabeth and Johnnie. I feel we can disect this and figure it out.
Regards,
Keith Russell

Hi Peg,
Sorry to hijack but I'm also interested as we may also be tied by blood. I believe we're both seeking information on the same people. Please see my recent post.
Thanks,
Keith
