Do you have a time period? I have a great-uncle Willard Peura who was born 1910 in Calumet, Michigan.

Where are you?

I am in California. This would be my husband's father. The date is about correct. Do you have any further information?

I don't have a lot of info about Willard. He was born about 1911 as Wilburt Püra (probably Wilburt Willard). As far as I know, he is still living. He was a twin; his brother was Wilbert Eino, whom we called Bennie, and he died in 1960. To my knowledge, Willard married and had a set of twins himself, but over the years I've lost their names and other info. Could your husband be one of these?

The father, John Püra, came from Finland in 1889 and settled in Calumet, Michigan in the Upper Penninsula. He worked about the copper mines, and later on the railroad. His brothers also came to the area; Erick worked the mines, while Olaf was a watchmaker and jeweler. John and Erick had large families, but Olaf only had one daughter.

John Püra was married twice. He married Mary Dommar in 1889 and their children were Hilda (1893-1965), Olga (1895-1974) , Eli Walter (1897-1968), Matt (1899-1943), William, my grandfather (1900-1971), and Senja (1902-1915).

When John's wife died about 1905, he married another Finnish immigrant named Mary about 1908. Their children were Ellen (1909-1975), Mabel (b. 1910, still living), Wilburt Willard (b. 1911) and Wilbert Eino (1911-1960).

Some time between 1910 and 1920, he changed the family name from Püra to Peura, probably because he thought it would be easier to pronounce. (Wrong! as you probably know)

Not long after 1920 (my guess is about 1922) the John Peura family moved to the Detroit area -- Ferndale, Royal Oak, and that vicinity.

If you've run the name Peura through surname searches like I have and come up with nothing, it's because they aren't in any databases. I think nobody knew what to do with the "Püra" and it's umlaut, so they just left it. Even "Peura" isn't anywhere. I finally found them by searching page-by-page through the census records till I found familiar names. John was listed as "John Bura" on the 1900 census, and even THAT isn't in a database.

I'd be interested in learning more about your husband and his history. My father, Robert Peura, moved out away from Detroit to Mt Clemens, and we began to lose track of the family. His brother (my uncle) is the only one whose address I still know. It'd be nice to get familiar again.

I know that it has been quite a while since your message was posted, but I was excited to read your posting. My husband's g-g-grandfather was Jacob Peura who settled in Cromwell. I have his daughter's name as Laila, not Lila, but I may be wrong. Here is the info that I have on him:

He and his first wife Gustava and two oldest children William H. and Hilma K. immigrated to the US around 1892, and lived in Maple, Wisconsin. They had another daughter Tekla around 1902. Sometime between 1902 and 1910, Jacob's first wife died and he remarried Anna. Sometime between 1910 and 1913, they moved to Carlton County, Minnesota, and they had a son Brunnolf around 1913 and a daughter Laila around 1914. Jacob Peura died on February 23, 1944 in Carlton County, Minnesota.

Hopefully, this helps. I'd love to hear any other information you have, too.

Hi, I am just starting to look into my background and don't have too much to go on. My grandfather was Arne Peura I believe born and raised in Marquette, Michigan. His mother left the family when he was 7 years old and went to Maine. Arne moved to Sudbury later on and married Lempi Mary Piirainen. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Liisa
