I am researching this line too. I can't tell if this is a new posting or a posting from 2000. Anyone currently researching Spencer Peugh, please contact me.

I recently had my yDNA test done which traces the patriarch line (i.e. my father's father's father ...). It should in fact trace my line for the Botts surname and match up with other Botts (unfortunately, not many Botts have tested). The matches I received had a significant number of Pugh/Peugh although none were perfect matches. Its possible that we shared a common ancestor before surnames were used, but the number of matches is surprising.

I notice that Spencer Botts, son of Lydia Botts and David Peugh seems to go by the Botts surname. Does anyone know if this were true and why? Did his children have Botts as their surname?

Thanks. Mike Botts

OK. I see now that Spencer Botts Peugh did not appear to use Botts as his surname. I did notice that several Peugh generations used Botts as middle names. I also noticed that the Peughs seem to be out of Wales which is where my yDNA points back to (in fact, rumor is that the Botts men were typically bodyguards of the Prince of Wales.

So, in order to explain my numerous links to the Peughs, either one of the Peugh descendants dropped the last name and used Botts as their surname (probably not likely) or we simply share common ancestors in Wales before the use of surnames.

I'm sorry. One last comment then I'll stop flooding the message board.

I looked back at my yDNA results and 25 matches are with Pugh, none with Peugh. Since I'm not familiar with the Pugh/Peugh clans, I need to ask: Is there a significance to the different spellings here? Thanks.

Spencer Botts Peugh was the son of my great great, great grandfather David Peugh and his first wife Lydia Botts, daughter of Moses Botts. Samuel Peugh, David's older brother married Elizabeth Botts, also a daughter of Moses. Spencer Botts Peugh used his full name I never saw a record where he used the name Botts except as a middle name. In fact he nearly always used the entire name Spencer Botts Peugh or occasionally Spencer B. Peugh because he had to discern between the several other Spencer Peugh's in the same areas...all related in some way. Spencer B. went to live with his uncle Samuel in Washington Co., IN after his father (David) died in 1823 in Kentucky. He raised a large family there and some remain in the area. Do you want a copy of the tree or the descendancy charts? I have a few of the Botts lines also but not as many. I come from David Peugh and his second wife, Sally Caseldine. She married David after Lydia Botts Peugh died. Sally and David had one son, John C. Peugh, my Great great grandfather before David died also.

Which Botts are you descended from?

No significance...just the way different branches spelled the name. I have a couple of instances in following the lines from Spencer peugh 1753-1815 down to present where brothers spelled the name differently and those branches kept using whichever spelling on down through the generations. If my theory to Spencer peugh's parentage is correct then we go back through Lewis and Ann Pugh to the 1600's in Wales at least. There were Botts involved with Lewis and Ann's family in Richmond Co., VA before Spencer was born in 1753 so it is not too unusual to think there were other Botts/Peugh/Pugh connections.
