To Julie, Dayle, and Angela,
I was looking through the LDS 1880 index and found a Charles Kuffal in Precinct 6, Montezuma Township, Summit County, Colorado, page 452 A. He is listed as being born in Prussia, age 33 (would make birth around 1847), and he is married (no family with him), and a miner. The neat thing is that right below his name is an "Antin Pedra" age 20 (could be 23, which would match our Anton Petera), born in Prussia, single, and a miner. This would explain why Anton is not listed with the rest of the family in the 1880 census for Wisconsin. Perhaps they both travelled out there to seek their fame and fortune. I know Anton came back to Wisconsin but what happened to Charles? This would also explain how Frank (Kuffal) Petera got the middle name of Charles. Of course the birth places are wrong but we all know how accurate the census can be...
Also, I am so excited because I travelled to South Dakota this summer and was able to copy some great pictures of some of the Petera relatives. It has been so nice to match some of the faces to the names that I have been researching for so long. I can scan them in and share them if you can receive them through email.
Does anyone still have the email address for Alvin Hutfles? He will want to know all of this too. Thanks, Carrie Taylor (
