Mary, Many needles exist in this hay stack. My family left Cattaraugus in groups between 1825 and 1839 they all went to
Wisconsin. Others I know of went to
Michigan. One way is to do a census (1840)to see where AJ
Perkins landed. I have seen the use of "AJ" as a short cut before in my research of finding people who bought property out "west". Looking into land records for these places, they list by purchaser, you can do that through Ancestry or others.
The name does not exist in my direct line, but indirectly "
Asa and
Alva Perkins" from
Berkshire,
Ma.,Pownal,VT.,Sandgate,VT.,etc. did come through this area at about that time. This was a popular route to take for a dozen reasons including religious groups, land give aways, etc.
My suggestion is to reword your board request; such as anyone know of "AJ
Perkins" originally from NY circa 1836?
Who knows you might get a nibble.
Lastly do you know what "AJ" stood for just incase I run across it later? I could guess but...
Good Night/Kelly
Perkins
