Hi Peggy!

I'm still around, and am now retired at 69. I still have all my correspondence with the distant cousins from the 70s. I hope to include some of it in my Parchman Family History Book, which I'm now working on.

I now have about 5000 documents and over 6000 names connected to my tree after 30 years and about 10,000 hours of work, but these include all 4 of my own grandparents' lines. The 2 brothers who went to Tennessee have many more descendants with the name since thos lines had lots of sons. The Perchment name died out with William (born 1925) after his son Patrick was adopted and took a new surname.

There are about 2000 descendants of Nicholas Parchman in my tree, but I don't usually follow the lines of the daughters of each generation beyond their own children. Otherwise, I calculate there would be over a million descendants by my 8th generation, most without the Parchman/Perchment/Parchment name. (assuming 8 surviving children per generation to reproduce up to the 6th generation, which then drops to about 5 reproducing survivors by the 7th generation, and to 3 by the 8th generation) If I include my grandson's 10th generation (with only about 2 reproducing survivors per generation), there would be about 7 million descendants of Nicholas. Of course sometimes cousins married cousins, so the actual number would be smaller.

By the way, I have found 2 earlier documents for Nicholas. He was in George Washington's colonial militia in Winchester, VA during the French and Indian War in 1758. In 1760, he signed as a witness for a deed in Winchester. Some legends say he was in the Fort Pitt area by 1763, but I have no evidence yet. The Indian depredations were still pretty bad in Western PA until after the Revolution, since the Quaker government signed a treaty with the Indians prohibiting white settlement until 1768.

I have searched hundreds of hours to connect him back to Germany to no avail. He is not on ANY ship's lists of immigrants. There were a number of Parchmanns in Westphalia in the late 1600s, and even a Nicolas Parchmann in one record in the early 1700s, but no proofs of connections.

I traveled to Parchim in Mecklenburg in 1997, but there were no Parchmanns there. I have Parchmann marriage records from Mecklenburg for the late 1800s. According to the German telephone directory, most Parchmans today live in an area between Hamburg and Mecklenburg, although there are a few in Berlin.

According to research I have done for the last 30 years on the Parchman ancestry, William Perchment (born 1925) had the following lineage:
George William Perchment (born ~1893)
Henry Leonard Perchment (born 1871)
William Perchment (born ~1830)
Peter Perchment (born 1801)
Peter Parchman/Perchment (born 1755)
Nicholas Parchman/ Parchment (born about 1730-1735 presumably in Germany)

Nicholas presumably had 4 sons. John and Philip (with the name Parchman) moved to middle Tennesse about 1789. Jacob was scalped by Indians in West Virginia in 1785, and Peter (named Parchman and Perchment in war records and pension applications) remained behind in Pittsburgh, where he was a pioneer of the city, having fought for Virginia (which claimed Fort Pitt) in the Revolution. One of Peter's daughters (Mary Perchment Forsythe) was an ancestor of the Mellons apparently. The Perchment family was on the social register in Pittsburgh around 1870 to 1900. One of Peter's grandsons married the daughter of the owner of the largest department store in Pittsburgh.

Gerry Parchman

I have been doing genealogy research for 30 years on the Parchman/Parchment/Perchment clans and have most names from 1750 to 1930 connected to the family. The Ohio clan descended from William Perchment (b 1830 in Pittsburgh), the son of Peter Perchment (born 1801), the son of Revolutionary soldier Peter Parchman/Perchment. All Of the descendants of the soldier took the name of Perchment, while the descendants of Peter's 2 brothers (John and Philip, who moved to Tennessee about 1789) took the name of Parchman. Peter's war records are mostly in the name of Parchman, as are some tax records. I think William left home in a huff when his father remarried, and went down the Ohio as a river as a boat joiner and settled in Cincinnati, where he was listed as a house carpenter in 1880 census. He was identified as the grandson of Mary Perchment (wife of the soldier) in her will. William's line is the only one with the Perchment name that survived past 1900, since all the other descendants left only female heirs, as there were few males, and they died young. William had 4 children by Oromina--Charles A, William, Ella, and Henry Leonard. I think that the latter William went by the name of John W Perchment, since he was the right age and appeared in the 1880 census, then as a soldier from Ohio in the Spanish American War and in the Yukon Territory in some indexes. I have a little more information if you contact me.

Was her maiden name Dean?

I don't want to pry into touchy areas, but how old were the children when they were adopted?

This is very interesting because the Perchment name has basically stopped. I have not found anyone who still carries the family name.

If I understand it, there were the 2 children born as Perchments, but later adopted by Harold Schoder- very interesting.

One more, and how are you related? Sorry for so many quetions.

-Paul

My Dad's family haven't been much help in any info about the Edwards' or Perchment families. My father's father is unknown and my Grandmother married Mr. Hutchinson soon after he was born. Most of my Dad's siblings are Hutchinson's so most of the Edwards/Perchment info is lost with time. So, I'm starting from scratch hoping to get lucky.
Hope this helps and you can pass along any info about your Perchment side. Would love to know how far you have gotten.
Hope to hear from you soon....
Mike
Florissant, MO

Thanks for the info. The names you mentioned are new names, not ones we have known about. The family we know about are in and around Allegheny Co. Pennsylvania.

As I have been searching the surname, I do see Perchments up in the Ohio area. Not sure how/where/when they connect.

We'll keep looking though.
If your interested, I'm putting what I find on a web site-
www.perchment.tripod.com

I'd would be glad to add anything you want there as well.

I did find a couple of Perchment people in the internet "white pages" and I've sent them a letter. We had been told that the surname has died out, but it appears there are a few around.

-Paul

Hi Michael

Wondering if you have any family genealogy for Peter Perchment (Parchman) of Allegheny Co., Pa. I am a descendant of Peter's brother, Phillip (using the "Parchman" version). Peter's wife, Mary Powell, was a sister to Martha who married James Amberson (d'cd 1812) of Butler Co., Pa. James' son, James, married Phillip's daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Parchman, b. 1796 in Robertson Co., Tn. That James died ca 1820 after only about 5 yrs of marriage and two children with Betsy: a son and a daughter--another James, b. 1816 and Eliza, b. 1818. This James is my line. Peter, Phillip and John were sons of Nicholas Perchment (Perchmon). Nicholas was called to a militia muster in Frederick Co. Va. 27 Oct 1758. Probably the birthplace of Peter (1754-55) and Phillip (1758). Peter lost his land in a bail forfeiture ca 1816-1818 for James Amberson according to Peter's Veteran's Pension application in 1828. Do you have any information about that bail case or events surrounding the case? Thanks Ken New Braunfels, Texas 78130

HI
Peter Perchment (Parchman) b. 1754, was a brother to my ancestor Phillip, b. 1758, who had moved on to Montgomery/Lawrence Co., Tn by 1790. With John Parchman, they were sons of Nicholas--first discovered / named in a militia muster in Frederick Co., Va., 27 Oct 1758. From his Veteran's Pension application of 1828, we find that Peter lost his land in Pa. from a bail forfeiture for his nephew (we believe), James Amberson, around 1818 - 1820. Peter's brother-in-law, James Amberson, d. 1812, Butler Co. Pa. I need details of the court records involving that proceeding--if you can help? The 1749 birthyear on Peter's tombstone is in error. Thanks--Ken
Kencms @ aol.com New Braunfels, Tx 78130

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the response.
Myer was Peter Parchment's brother-in-law. The Mary Powell named there is probably Myer's widow. I doubt Peter's wife would be using her maiden name as administrator, but anything is possible I suppose.

Ken
