I think, think, it may have come from the county of Peebleshire, in Scotland.

Thankyou

Thankyou. I was under the impression that Harris was either a Scottish or Irish name, I just can't find any info on it. Thanks again.

Peoples is the Irish spelling of the Scottish name Peebles. My ancestors apparently were Scot-Irish having arrived in Canada in the early 1830's from county Armagh in the now Northern Ireland. While census records show their surnames as Peoples eventually most reverted to the spelling Peebles. However some of the line retained the surname Peoples including a branch in North Dakota.

I understand that my great grandparents (Peoples) came from Ireland to Canada in the mid-late 1800's. My grandfather's (John I. Peoples) family settled in New Jersey (Columbus-Trenton Area) but I remember hearing of his cousins in Philadelphia.

Thanks

Know any names of cousins in Phila? My ggrandfather was George Peoples, b. abt 1828 Ire., d. 7/1872 Phila, lived in Port Richmond sect. of Phila. He married Roseann?(poss. McSorley). Appears in 1860 census. City Directory for 1860 also lists James Peoples at nearby address. Record of cemetery lot purchase 12/5/1856 so family here by that date. Known children: Geo. Jr., b. abt 1855, James Sep 1858, Anthony May 1857, Sarah 1860, Catherine 1862, Mary 1865, Rose 1866. Any connection?

My ggrandfather, George Peoples of Ireland, could not read or write nor could his wife; therefore at the mercy of those who supposedly could. This is evidenced by spellings as diverse as Peeples, Pepoles and Peples! Any Phila. connections?

My great grandfather, David Peoples, was born in Letterkenny Co., Donegal,Ireland, and had a brother named George Peoples (Peebles) b. 3/20/1812 who married Margaret King b. 9/25/1822. Among their children are Jane, Anna, John, Thom, Mary, Martha And Daniel. Could this be your relative George Peoples (Peebles)? If he is, do you have any further information concerning that family line?

Thanks in advance for your help.
