My Peoples family came from Northern Ireland. Robert Peoples was born around 1820 in Londonderry, Ireland. He, his wife Mary Ann Lang/Long, and family immigrated to NYC via Liverpool around 1846. They moved to Aurora, Illinois. He fought in the Civil War and died in Aurora in 1885. I have been searching for him and his record into Ireland, but without success. Any ideas?

In response to the Wayne Peebles message asserting that those using the surname Peoples "eventually most reverted to the spelling Peebles."

My apologies but this story seems highly suspect and I can't help but wonder if you have any documentation to back up any of this assertion? Maybe an example or two where you've found specific families changing the spelling as you've described?

We have to be careful that we don't continue to perpetuate what may only be family tradition, passed down from one generation to the next, but disguised as fact. If you have no documention to back it up, then please label this claim appropriately and vice versa.

I hope you understand.

History And Origin
1. Irish (Ulster): adopted as an English equivalent of Gaelic Ó Duibhne ‘descendant of Dubhne', a personal name meaning ‘ill-going', ‘disagreeable'. [Compare Deeney -- Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Duibhne ‘descendant of Duibhne', a byname from duibhne ‘disagreeable', ‘ill-tempered'.]

Peoples is a pseudo-translation based on the phonetic resemblance of the Gaelic name to Gaelic daoine ‘people'.

2. English: patronymic from a pet form (in -el) of the Old French personal name Pepis, oblique case Pepin (see Pepin).
