Sandy,
I believe that the M. E. Penabaker you are looking for is my grandfather.
Milton Ephriam Penabaker, born in 1902 in Chesaning, Michigan.
His father was George Penabaker, mother Lydia Morehead Penabaker.
His siblings were Edith - born 1896, Lewis - born 1899
Eva - born 1904 and Hilda - born 1906. Milton died in 1964. I have a few
memories of him. He also had a grandfather named Lewis - Lewis came to
Michigan from Canada in the 1860's probably. I'm only beginning to do
my familys genealogy. Milton lived in Alanson, MI where he worked on
the railroad. He had two daughters, Bonnie (my mother - unfortunately deceased
recently) and Joanne still alive. I've not come across the
name Gladys Harrow before but am very interested to know how they are related.
Can I be of more help to you? I would be very interested in a copy of the letter.
Thank you, Penny Postma

Hi Penny,

Lewis Penabaker 1827 - 1902 was first married to Olive Rebecca Kribs and secondly to Christiana Babetson. The census says:
1870 census, New Haven township, Shiawassee County, Michigan, House 37, Lewis Pennabaker, 42, farmer, Christina 35, Rebecca 13, Reuben? 11, Walter 10, Ida 7, George 5

I'm trying to determine if Olive was the mother of any children listed in the 1870 census? Though past family historians led me to believe that Olive Rebecca died in Chesaning, Michigan I can't find a death record or cemetery transcription for her. Since Lewis's 2nd wife died in 1877 I now wonder if Olive Rebecca died and is buried in Canada.

You said that your ancestor was George Penabaker and I wonder if his obituary mentions step brothers or step sisters. George's mother must be Christina but I don't know the mother of his older sister Rebecca or his older brother Reuben. I'd sure appreciate some help figuring this family out.

I'm currently traveling around Michigan to further document Olive Rebecca Kribs and her siblings.

Many thanks, Marsha from Oakland County, Michigan

From:
"A Biographical History of Early Settlers and their Descendants in Waterloo Township"

ISBN 0-919061-00-1
"5105 III PANNEBECKER, LEWIS, was married to Rebecca Kribbs and after her decease to Christina Robinson. He resides in Chessening County, Michigan, where he followed farming many years. His family consists of two children, namely: IV George and IV Rebecca."

You might try this source and following the Kribbs line - there may be more info Rebecca's death as well as on the children. It is available in the Toronto Reference Library on Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario - call number 920.07134 E168.

Good luck!

Hi Cal,

Many thanks for the reply. It's now believed that Lewis Penabaker and Rebecca Kribs children died as infants and are buried in the Hespeler cemetery. If I ever get back to Hespeler I'll look for a gravestone for Rebecca. The children George and Rebecca are most likely Lewis and Christina's children as the 1870 census lists the oldest as Rebecca age 13, Reuben 11, Walter 10, Ida 7 and George 5. They lived in New Haven township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.
Thanks again,
Marsha
