Does anyone own any paintings by Richard Pembery born ca 1820, certainly still painting by 1881. I would be interest to have a description of them.

My father in Melbourne Australia has two large oil paintings by R Pembery and they are both of tall ships in rough waters. He was trying to find out more.

Born about 1820 in Westminster, and living in Lambeth at the time of the 1881 census, with his son Francis ( a painter and infant Grandson Francis,(my grandfather. The family have no paintings by him, and will be pleased to know that some are still existing. Also worked as a signwriter. I have a bound set of The Universal Decorator, which belonged to them and an old large geography book of theirs. It refers to Captain Cook's latest voyage.
He liked his drink from family stories.

I have inherited a painting by Richard Pembery. It is a head and shoulders painting of a fresh faced youth which I believe to be a boy but others feel is a girl. The dress style is a Bavarian type hat, a blouse/shirt and a sheepskin waistcoat. It is slightly damaged but I am lead to believe it is repairable.

Richard was my great great grandfather. So far we have identified a number of seascapes and landscapes by him.
He was born in Westminste and moved to Lambeth, Carlyle Street, where he lived with his son and grandchildren. He had 3 sons all painters or signwriters.
I believe that some of his paintings went on sale in Sotheby's International from Australia this month.
The painting could be a commissioned portrait or one of his children. The family (widest sense) had a bat buildin business in Westmister at that time, so he would have cotacts from overseas.
If you would be so kid as to photograph the painting and send adigital image to john@pembery.co.uk I will look for a family resemlane if you like.
Best wishes.

John,

I e-mailed you before finding this board and thread. I'll just post this in case others are interested. I have two small paintings, signed R. Pembery. They are very nicely done! I have tried over the yeras to find some information about the artist and this is the first I have found. I'm delighted to finally identify the man who did them.
