Two things that make me laugh about our clan... 1. Those that can't pronunce the name correctly and when I try to correct that person I either get an attidute or a weird look. and 2. My two brothers...

Anyway... I just wanted to verify some info... just to see if what I found out others here found out also... in particular... our coat of arms and family history (I ordered this from one of the family history research company that is out there while I was deployed to Kosovo in 2001):

"The noble Spanish family name Pelaez is clasified as being of personal name origin. According to scholars the "oldest and most pervasive type of surname is that derived from a given name". Such family names may be derived from a parental first name or from the first name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the original bearer of the surname. In this particular instance, the surname Pelaez derives from the Spanish personal name "Pelaya" and from the latin "pelagius" meaning "from the sea, or seaman.". Thus, the initial bearer of this surname would have been known as "the son or descendant of Pelaya". Although the surname Pelaez is found throughout Spain, it is most commonly found in the kingdom of Aslurias. One of the first known descendants of this surname was Pelaya Pelaez, who helped King Pelaya with four huundred of his men in Luarca. Another earlier reference to this name is a recordof one Quiteria Pelaez, daughter of Joan Pelaez who was baptized in the hurch of San Sebastian in Villapalacios, Albacete in March, 1557. The marriage of Juan Morcilla Pelaez and Mariz de Quesada was celebrated on the 21st of April, 1636 in the church of San Esteban, Villapalacias, Albacete and the irht of Ana Maria Pelaez, daughter of Ramon Pelaez and Maria de Paz took place on the 31st of July, 1822, in Aquilar de Campos, Valladolio. In a Spanish military armorial we read of one Pedro Pelaez Campomanes who entered the Infantry of the Royal Army in the year 1792 and Vicente Pelaez Arias entered the Infantry in 1844. Norable bearers of the surname Pelaez include Martin pelaez the jesuit mentioned in 1586. The nobility of the Pelaez family was recognized by the official Spanish authorities, with the granting of a coat of arms, which is described below.

Blazon of arms: Gules an arm in armour issuing from the sinister flank, holding a sword with the point in chief. Background color being red.

Chest: Three ostrich feathers.

Country of Origin: Spain"

That's all that I have on our clan. I ordered this in 2001 and I didn't get it until 2002. Was told that it would take at the most 3 months.

Also so you guys will know and to help you in anyway, the branch of the family that I'm from has been in the Dominican Republic since right before the formation of the Dominican Republic. Well, that's as far back as I was able to find out. If anyone has any more info, please share it. :-)

An uncle of mine, Al Pelaez, did some research in Spain. ..about 50 years ago...
The name Pelaez...formerly Pelayo goes back in Spain at least into the 700's.
At least one of the ancestors came to the New World in the very early 1500's...there are marriage records on file in Puerto Rico.
Old National Geographic maps show Pelaez Mountain....in Puerto Rico.
I've seen the old description of the coat of arms....I don't remember it all...but I know that the field is blue...so don't buy a red or green one. I'm not sure of the exact origins...but I'm told that our distant ancestor was known as 'the coward' and was El Cid's right hand man because he saved his life at some point.

Was your uncle Al born in NYC and was his father's name Hipolito Pelaez, born in Cayey, P.R. and his Mother's name Angelina, born in Panama? Did Al have 2 children, a boy and a girl? If so, then maybe your uncle Al is my 1st cousin Al Pelaez.

thank you for the history.
My grandparents , Balbino and Clotilde Pelaez, emigrated from Asturias region of Spain to Habana Cuba in the early 30s. My brother and I have not been able to trace our family history any further back than them. This situation is mainly due to the Cuban/USA embargo.
My mothers' grandparents who were Ramos-Acosta from Villa Santa Clara, Santa Clara, Cuba

Arture, thanks very much for the very interesting info on the Pelaez family clan. It seems the Pelaez family migrating to the Carib had spread to Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Dominican Republic, which I think interesting. Unfortunately, I don't know very much about the Pelaez family, except that I know it's from Asturias, where my grandfather Fidel Pelaez was born and his family migrated to Cayey, Puerto Rico, probably, sometime in the 1800, but not sure. One of 1st cousins did some research on the Pelaez clan while in Spain and got pretty much the same info as you, including a foto of the coat of arms. I was born in Valencia, Spain & migrated to the US in 1954 at the age of 11 y/o, but in my travels back to Spain I didn't get a chance to do any research. I have sent your post to my neohew whohas recently been interested in researching family historyt and I think he'll find your post most interesting and informative. Thanks again and I appreciate the time and trouble you took to do the research. Please keep in contact. Bernardo Espi Pelaez
