Looking for leads on a family tree I'm working on. My Grandfather's name was George Francis Pekar, born in Altoon Pa in 1908 or '09. His father's name was John and his mother's name was Catherine Palcho. George married Mary Lazorick in Altoona, they had three daughters, Eleanor, Virginia and Barbara. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I believe George's parents may have been born in Chezloslovakia. Thanks.

Hi George,

Not sure if you will read this or not since your original post was back in 2007. I was just looking around online at the origins of the Pekar last name and came across this. I noticed you put your family was from Altoona, PA. My father, Paul Pekar, was born in Altoona, PA. I am not sure of too much about my grandparents, they passed long before I was born and when my father was young. I think my grandfather's name was Paul Anthony Pekar (went with the last name baker when he was in the amry) and my grandmother was Mabel. My dad has brothers and sisters that I have never met. We keep in touch with my Aunt Doll the most. I am just wondering if there is any relation? It would be nice to find more family from my father's side.

My grandfather was Edward Pekar, Georges brother. I don't really know much about him other than his dad was George who immigrated from Czech. I know his mother was Katherine. My grandmother always told my mother that Edward died in 1955 in Altoona, PA, which is where I am from also. I have not been able to locate that info, but I do keep finding info on an Edward Pekar that died in Long Island, NY, so I am wondering if he is the same person and my grandma told the family that he died for her own reasons. He and my grandmother, Beulah, had 4 kids together. All of the kids still live in Pennsylvania, in the Altoona area. I have since moved to California, but am trying to put together my family as well. If you have any information on my grandfather, please let me know. If I come across anything on George, I will let you know as well.

Hi:
Guess this makes us cousins! I always thought my grandfather's dad's name was John? Maybe it is George. Haven't found much of anything on the family. Did find one short article once that says that brother Albert was killed by a train in 1943., although he was using the last name Baker at the time, for what reason, I don't know. Interesting to know there is still family in the area. My grandpa & grandma moved to Detroit, MI and all but one of their grandchildren are still here, the other is in California. Thanks for the reply, had given up hope. If I find anything else will let you know. Would like to get to know the family. If you like, or anyone else is interested, email address is vlevene@yahoo.com Thanks again! Valerie Levene

Have you found a place of birth in Czechoslovakia?
Were you informed about this post from 2007?

Yes, I did see that post from 2007, but unfortunately, I don't read the language, so I could not understand the information I came across, other than I see that the surnames I seek are very common. I have no other ideas where to look. I seem to have hit a brick wall. Thank you anyway.

You're welcome but you should have come back and asked for explanation. :)

You must have some US documents on your George (Gyorgy) PEKAR? His arrival manifest, draft registration form, state marriage application, church marriage record, children baptismal record, SS-5Form or naturalization intent and petition should have his place of birth.
Sometimes a religion can pinpoint a location. Birds of a feather fly together. He went to a location in America where someone from the village or family went before him.

Your grandfather's George Francis PEKAR's church baptismal record should have his parents place of birth. Seems you know that his father was John (Janos in Hungarian/Jan in Slovak) and mother Catherine (Katalyn in Hungarian) PALCHO is Americanized version of PALCSO - Hungarian and PALC'O - Slovak which equal to same pronounciation.
