I'm researching my husband's grandfather, Ladislaw J. Pekar, who immigrated through Ellis Island in 1910 and settled in Bridgeport, CT. He was 17 when he arrived, and his place of birth is on the ship manifest as "Plavsca, Hungary." He married Margaret Vojtek (spelling unknown), probably in Connecticut. Does anyone have any further information on Ladislaw or his wife? I'm particularly looking for information on his ancestry, but later information will be welcome as well.
K. Pekar

Re: Ladislaw or Laszlo Pekar
Much of the information you listed sounds familiar. My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Pekar. I have not verified this yet. I can't be much help because I have very little verified information. I have seen Plavsca, Hungary listed in information. According to family stories, she had 5 sisters and came here between 1882 - 1888. She was probably a generation older than your relative. The family settled in Arcadia, Indiana County, PA. When the coal mines closed some of the family moved to Bridgeport, CT around 1920, while many others moved to Flint or Detroit, MI. My family ended up in Flint. They are Slovakian, which was part of the Austria-Hungary Empire. I have also heard the name Vojtek. I think there was a Vojtek family in Flint, MI. I can't give you any other information. My great grandmother Elizabeth Pekar married Joseph Menosky. I have considerable information on the Menosky family but very little on the Pekar family. I know Elizabeth had a sister Anna who married an Androsky. Marcia Elsner

Re: Ladislaw or Laszlo Pekar
Your information is intriguing. I have absolutely nothing on Ladislav (aka Laszlo) Pekar before his arrival in this country at the age of 17, other than that he came from Plavsca (or Plavec.) However, I do know that when he got here in 1910, he went first to Detroit; after a few years, he moved to Bridgeport, CT. So based on geographical locations, both in the US and in Slovakia, it looks like your Elizabeth Pekar has some sort of relationship to my Ladislav Pekar.

Re: Ladislaw or Laszlo Pekar
I came across your posts for the Pekar surname while searching for information on my own families - Zaleta/Lokaj. These families were from the villages of L'utina and Olejnikov in Slovakia.
My great grandmother Katherine Soltis had a sister Anna who married a Steven/Stephan Pekar. Anna and Stephen had a daughter Anna who was born in 1913. She married a man by the name of Stephen Nagy. I know this family lived in the Bridgeport/Stratford CT area.
It also appears that my great grandfather Andras Lokaj (who married Katherine Soltis), upon his arrival through Ellis Island in 1908, was heading to Bridgeport to a cousin Pekar. The name is quite illegible on the manifest.
I believe the families spent some time in PA, but my grandmother Anna Lokaj Zaleta was born in Bridgeport, CT in 1911. Anna Pekar, her cousin, was born in 1913 in CT as well.
Wondering if either of you have any information on the Pekars of Bridgeport that might tie in to my information?
Many thanks, Diane Hassan
