Peffer Family

My great-grandfather, John William Peffer, was born abt. Oct. 1844/1845 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. His father was William Peffer who was born abt. 1812. John's mother's name was Barbara, but I do not know her maiden name. John William Peffer left Pennsylvania and 23 January 1865, married my great-grandmother Alzina Reynolds in Branch County, Michigan. They had a son, John Franklin Peffer, who was my grandfather and he married my grandmother Cordelia Skidmore in 1897 in Deerfield, Isabella, Michigan.

I have searched and searched for Willam Peffer's parents and Barbara's (his wife) maiden name without success. I cannot find a birthdate or marriage date for either of them. I do strongly suspect, however, that both William and Barbara are buried in Branch County, Michiga

In searching the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 census reports for Miffline county I believe that William's father was possibly George Peffer, who lived in Mifflin County in 1810, 1820 and 1830 and who had sons that would fall into the correct age catergories for William. In 1810 there were only two Peffers living in Mifflin County - George and Joseph Peffer, with Joseph being the younger of the two. It is possible they could have been father and son. In 1820, there was only George Peffer, who lived in Wayne Township. In 1830, there was George Peffer and a Philip Peffer living in Wayne Township, but I believe Philip was George's son and William Peffer's brother. In 1840 there was Philip Peffer and William Peffer living in Granville Township. Evidently, George had died before the 1840 census. His wife must have dined before the 1830 census.

If anyone out there has any information they are willing to share, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thank you ever so much.

Hello Earl.

I have a bit of information for you regarding Peffer family of Branch County Michigan. William Peffer was also married to my GGGrandmother Amanda Randall Baird in 1883. I located their marriage cert in Branch County. Am sorry that I did not research Barbara or dig a little deeper into the Peffer family. William and Barbara Peffer are buried in Lockwood cemetery in Ovid Township, Branch County, MI.

Marriage cert of Wm Peffer, age 71 b. Penn and Mrs Amanda Randall Baird, age 51, b. New York. Both of Ovid Township, Branch County, MI. December 20, 1883.

There is also a Wm. W. Peffer who married "Leorora" Schuler. I did not check the certificate/year. Volume F, pg 96, line 9224. I do not know if this a connection for you. Perhaps Barbara died and William remarried a few times or this could be a son of William?

Elias Peffer, b. Penn. Age 82 yrs, 11 mo, 1 day.
Died 23 Feb 1901 in Coldwater, Branch County, MI.
He was a widower. Carpenter by trade.
He died of "old age".
Could this be a brother of William?

There was more information on the Peffer name, but I did not research it. I can look for more info the next time I take a roadtrip out that way but it will be a while.

I took a picture of the gravesite of Wm and Barbara Peffer. Am not sure if it has turned out since I just took the photo this past weekend. If you would like a copy, let me know.

Hope this has helped you.

Respectfully,
Mickie

Mickie:
Thanks so much for information on William Peffer. I had thought perhaps William and Barbara may have moved on to Isabella County and died there, and I certainly did not know that William had married a second time after Barbara died.
Yes, if the picture turns out, I would love to have a copy of it.
As far as Elias, I'm not certain as I do not know any of William's brothers or sisters. I know only that he was born in Pennsylvania, but do not know to whom or where. I am working with the Mifflin County Historical Society in an effort to find more information. I am glad to know that William and Barbara are buried in Branch County. I had wanted to make a trip up there this summer, but with my health, age (70) and the price of gasoline - I'm not certain anymore. Just trying to get as much done on our family as I can so that I will have it to pass on to my children. Thank you so much for your help.

John William Peffer's daughter Sarah Barbara married twice in Isabella County, Michigan, first to Jasper Oldes/Oles and second to David "Jud" George French, whose mother Margaret Matilda (Roby) French was a sister of my great-grandfather Milton Leonard Roby. I have information of the descendants of Jud and Sarah and am in contact with a couple of them regularly.

Do you know where John William and Alzina are buried?

John William's sister Mary "Martha" Martha (Peffer) Hutchins and her husband Admiral Hutchins lived in Isabella County, Michigan, and are buried there.

Alzina (Reynolds) Peffer had two nieces who married brothers of Jud French. I am willing to share information if you are interested.

Ron,

I have little knowledge of the Peffer family. This William Peffer was born and raised in Pennsylvania and moved to Branch County, Michigan. He married Amanda Randall Baird after his wife, Barbara, died. I have not been back to Branch County courthouse since I found the initial information. I had found a few Peffers listed in the books, but since I am not researching that family, I did not dig any further at that time. Am sorry that I cannot be of more help. Happy Hunting, Mick

Mick--I thought you had information about the Baird family and that is what the other person who I am in contact with is looking for; although I am still looking for information on the Peffers, I was contacting you to see if I could put her in contact with you re: the Bairds. Did I misunderstand?
