Major Peace's father was John Peace (my 4G Grandfather). The following is printed in The History of Baker County - printed 1991.
It says that John Peace was born in 1755, and his ancestors were natives of England. He and three brothers emigrated to America before the Revolutionary War and started the Peace name in America. John was (actually) born on the voyage from England to America. They settled in Virginia and then North Carolina.
The Biographical History of North Carolina states: "The Peaces, I believe, conceded to be the oldest in Granville in point of residence. They are said to have been among the very first families to come up country after the Indian massacre of 1713." The date of their arrival is not known, but may be taken as between 1713-46 (this makes no sense if he was born in 1755.
In later years of the 1700's John came to Georgia and took up his soldier's claim of 250 acres of land in Hancock County, GA, near Buffalo Creek. John served in the Revolutionary War and later taught school many years. He died January 7, 1826, in Monroe County, GA.
John was married to Elizabeth Wade, born in Wales. Their children were (a) Major, eldest son (b) Nancy, married Lemuel Lovett; (c) Jane, married Peter Bray; (d) Martha, married Robert McCook; (e) Temperence, married William Brewster; (f) John, died in Columbus, GA; (g) Daniel, lost his life in a steamboat accident while on his way from Illinois to Georgia; and (h) Elizabeth, married a man named Johnson. Hope this helps. I would love to hear what other Peace information you may have that I might not have.
