I am searching for information about Carlton Augustine Peabody. He was born Dec. 31, 1858 in Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts, son of Jacob and Eliza (Chapman) Peabody. Carlton A. Peabody was a Corporal in the U. S. Army at the time of his death on March 22, 1888 at Fort Klamath, Klamath County, Oregon. Did he die in action, or of natural causes? Was Corporal Carlton A. Peabody married to Edith J. Garrison (born June 1868), and did he have a son Hector C. Peabody (born April, 1887 in Oregon)? Is Carlton Augustine Peabody in anyone's family history?

Hello, I saw your reply and I'm so glad to hear from you. Edith Garrison, born June, 1868 in Kansas was the daughter of Charles M. Garrison and his second wife Clarissa A. Hoskinson. Edith Garrison was raised by her grandparents Riley M. and Martha (Fisher) Hoskinson in Bainbridge Island, Washington. A lady told me that in the Civil War pension files is an Edith G. Peabody/Edith G. Wood, widow of Carlton A. Peabody.
The 1900 census of Kitsap County, Washington lists Edith with her second husband John Wood and her son Hector C. Peabody, born April, 1887 in Oregon, and Edith's two children to her second husband. Hector C. Peabody's father was born in Massachusetts and his mother was born in Kansas.
I found an entry for Carlton Augustine Peabody in "Our Family Tree" in a rootsweb website. Carlton was born Dec. 31, 1858 in Topsfield, Mass. and died March 22, 1888 in Fort Klamath, Oregon. Carlton was the son of Jacob Symonds Peabody and Eliza Mary Chapman.
Does this information match up with your great-grandfather? Are you descended from Carlton's son Hector C. Peabody or was Carlton married previously to someone else before he married Edith Garrison?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. It's wonderful to know that someone else is actually interested in this family.
Sincerely, Carolyn Clark: orbie626@hotmail.com

"Carlton Augustine Peabody" is my great grandfather on my mother's side. I have his DOB as 1 Jan 1859 in Topsfield, Essex , Massachusetts, USA. Sgt. C.A.Peabody K 14th US Infantry died 21 Mar 1888, of Typoid Fever at Fort Klamath, Oregon Territory. He was buried there. After 4 year when the fort waas closed his remains were taken to the Presidio SF Army Cemetery for interment 1 Oct 1892. When he died he left a wife Edith Jane Garrison Peabody (DOB about Jun 1868 in Kansas) and his son, Hector Cato Peabody (DOB 17 Apr 1887 Fort Klamath, , Oregon, USA). Edith Peabody went back to her former home of Bainbridge Island where she was rasied by her grandparents Riley M. & Martha Hoskinson. She then married John A. Wood in Bainbridge Island, WA.
I'd be happy to discuss more information if you get this pos. Sammylou Brisbine LaRocca, in CA.
