Alex was a bit less than half Winnebago. Alex's father, Michel LePailleut (later changed to "Payer") was French-Canadian. His mother was Mau-nah-tee-see or Therese Decorah (or Portage, Wis.), who first married and had children with French-Canadian, Jean Lecuyer, next had children with Augustine Grignon, and then married Alex's father. Therese was the daughter of Spoon Decorah (who was 1/2 Winnebago). Her mother was probably Winnebago.
Sarah Rasdall was 1/2 Winnebago. Her mother was Nowawchockwinkah and her father was a white man from Kentucky, Abel Rasdall. They lived near Madison, Wis.

Looking to find out more info about Sarah Rasdall. Did she and Alex Payer have children? Do you know her death date? Sarah was half Winnebago. Sarah's mother was full Winnebago. Nowawchockwinkah was the daughter of Whitebreast. (Neither White Men Nor Indians p.21) Abel Rasdall was the first son of Robert and Elizabeth/Nancy (Wright) Rasdall. Abel was born in Warren Co, Ky on August 15, 1805 E-mail me if you want more info about the Abel Rasdall family. Barbara Schan

Hi Barbara,
Yes, they did have several children. Coincidentally, I actually am the author of Neither White Men Nor Indians. What's your connection?
