Hi, I realise my query is not related to this thread, but I would be interested in contacting you regarding information you may have on my ancestors - the Dick family of Oamaru. It seems you have some photos and information which I have not found elsewhere. I'd be interested in sharing what I have with you. Where do you fit into the family tree?
Kind regards, Nicola

Capt James Dick, Oamaru

Hello Carolyn, thank you for making contact. My name is Elaine Monks. My connection to the Dick family is through my children and ex-husband Deryl Monks. Capt James Dick was Deryls great great uncle. The connection is through the Cant line. I would not have been interested in following this line had I not been living in Oamaru and being contacted by a great granddaughter of James Dick who lived in Australia and wanted information on him. What is your connection. I have a question for you. Do you know what boat Capt James Dick was on in the US Civil War when he saw the fight between the Merrimack and the Monitor? James does not have a headstone and if we could establish the name of the boat the US may purchase on for him !!
My email is monpay@ihug.co.nz. I would love to have more information, copies of certificates, photos etc. I head off to Australia for Xmas at the end of next week so things are a bit of a rush at the moment but I will do my best.
I have got stuck on establishing ancestors in Scotland for James Dick, so possibly you could help there.
He played a major role in keeping the Oamaru Harbour open to shipping and has not had recognition here for what he did. so that is another mission for when I have time !!
Great to have contact with you. Elaine

Just a bit of Info on Mary Mitchell Dick - she was quite a girl! I was following an old family story that my great uncle married very briefly and found this:
Mary Mitchell Dick married Neil Smith Turner, an engineer, in 1902. They had four children down south then moved to Auckland where they divorced in 1920. Mary married William Henry Cooper in 1924 and they divorced in 1930. Mary then went on to marry Hallyburton Johnstone in 1935 and they divorced in 1938. Hallyburton was a wealthy retired farmer (there is a sports complex named after him in Auckland). She then returned down south (as Mary Mitchell Johnstone) and died in 1947 in Christchurch. Paddy
