Hi!
I am trying find any information on my great great grandmother, Lydia Emily Pay (later Stead) and her father WILLIAM PAY. They were originally of Folkestone/Ramsgate, Kent England and Lydia later moved to Australia where she died in Brisbane. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Lydia had 4 children, Harold Robert, Cyril Joseph, Spencer and Mildred, who would have used the surname Stead. Many thanks. Happy Christmas!

My father William Henry Pay (29/3/07 -died 13/11/ 81 ) was born in Ramsgate Kent . We have a family tree complete to Thomas Michael Pay , dads grandfather.
Information about him has been lacking . Dads father was Clarence Charles Pay (12/12 1865).If this sounds what you are looking for please contact us .

I have only browsed the family tree mainly on the Mormon site (above) but if you want to go further back I think you will find that the family arrived in Kent from Shropshire in the 17th century. The family base seems to have been around Wem (nr Shrewsbury). Some of them then moved to the Folkestone/Dover area of Kent and Ash Kent (about 10 miles away). They move around these areas for the next 2 centuries with (I think) ofshoots of the family in Thanet Kent, London and then the USA and later as you say Australia.

I havn't written this all down yet or I would send you a copy. Its fun if you try the Mormon site. People in Shropshire, around Dover, Folkestone, Margate, Canterbury or Ash Kent are probably your relations. The family has limited imagination where male names are concerned try William, Thomas and John and most of the family will appear (Richard and Henry are also quite popular). If you need any more help please ask as I may have figured that bit out - my problem is working out the 19C......

Best wishes

John

Surnames: Pay Stead
Thank you John for that information! It was really interesting! Great to hear from you. If I can be of any help with the decendents of William downwards then just ask.

Do you have William and Lydia on your tree anywhere?

Kind regards, Sacha.

I'm researching my Pay family ancestors in Kent and had already concluded by the clustering in the area that they were probably all inter-related somehow. Have you any idea why or how they came to migrate from Shropshire?
Could you give me any names and details of the Pays who originally settled in Kent etc., so that I can tie them in with mine ?

I am researching my connections to the Pay Family. I am seeking information in relation to James Pay who was I believe born at Bridge in Kent in 1840. I subsequently have him recorded in the 1881 Census at Bexley Heath married to 'Mitilda'?. I can be contacted at jeremyc@optusnet.com.au.

Hi Jennifer,
Can you give us a date on your Thomas Pay. There is a Thomas and an Ellenor born B 1831 and 1839 in Bridge and Canterbury. He is in the 1881 and 1901 censuses in Boughton and Dover I think (or my computer does) Is this the one? Thomas is a very common family name (as are John, Edward, William and Richard)
If so he will be of wider interest as Marian's line (see above posts) comes from Bridge and my ancestors each seem to go there for a stay in their twenties - it was a big trip for them as they had to move about 3 miles! . We are still working on who the parents of the people born in the 1820s and 30s in Bridge were. There seem to be quite a few lines which may all lead back to a few people in the 1790s. There is hope though.....
Interested to know what you have even if it isn't him - he might be somewhere else in my computer if he isn't that Thomas - at present I have 89 other Thomas Pays of Kent on the data-base!

Try, try....try again...

Hi Jennifer.

Do you have dates and/or a place or two. I am up to Thomas Pay no 90 on my data-base. There is one Thomas and Ellenor (b 1831 and 1839 Bridge and Canterbury. He survives into the 1881 and 1901 censuses in Boughton/Blean and Dover and worked on the railway (if the computer is right) Is he yours?
If so he is a Bridge Pay which is very interesting - Marian (see above posts) traces her line back to Bridge and my people seem to go there presumably to work on local farms when they get into their twenties ( they float around nearby villages) We know of several Pay families in Bridge in the early 19c but havn't yet found out where they come from - which should be possible...given time.
Even if he isn't the one - one of the other 89 might be so please let me know.
