Pavao - Ginetes, Sao Miguel, Azores

Looking for any relatives who might be living, or anyone who knows about the Pavao's in Ginetes around the turn of the 20th century.

My Great Grandfather was Jose Pavao Trindade, who came here to the US around 1900. He lived in New Bedford, MA his whole life. Here, he was known as Joe Piva. As near as we can tell, the people processing his family when they immigrated to the US arbitrarily changed his last name to Piva.

Hi Jay,

I have Pavão's from Ginetes on my mother's maternal side. Don't know if it will help you in your search, but you can check her tree here:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/31607942/family

I think normally you would have to go back until about 1860 at which point you can order the microfilmed records of the church of São Sebastian (Ginetes) where you will be able to work backwards and do a thorough search of your ancestry.

If you don't have the info to that point where you can order the film, i would suggest perhaps using the services of a researcher to get you to that point. Than order the film. I have used one named João Ventura (heroi99@yahoo.com) who helped me get to the point of being able to order the film and my research took off from there.

Best of luck to you on your search.

Sorry Jay i also forgot to mention that their is another researcher to will do research based upon blocks of time. (George Pacheco). He is also a very good researcher who i would highly recommend that might be able to get you to point of being able to order that microfilm record.

I have no affiliation to either of these researchers, btw.

Surnames: Paiva, Pavao, Pavão
On my fathers side there is Paiva and Pavao (Pavão). The Pavao side came from The Azores (uncertain which island) during the early 20th century and landed on Ellis Island. They changed their surnames to Paiva and settled in Bristol Rhode Island/Massachusetts, pretty close to New Bedford, but not next door, it seems most Portuguese and Italians settled in southern New England. I still have relatives there which use the surname Paiva, some of them are slightly darker than me only because my mothers side is quite pale being French and Irish, your quite darker than me as well lol. So we COULD be closely related in some manner. I did do a DNA test on 23andme.com which is still processing my ancestry composition which will tell me what percentage of me is from what countries, and also if there are any relatives related to me on 23andme.com by their own DNA test. I'm not sure if this is a bit late to be posting here since your post is from 2009, but I'm just letting ya know if you're still active on here.
