The spelling was probably mis-transcribed in various records. U and N look very similar when handwritten.

This is where I also am lost. Accordiong to the records Anna and walter were husband and wife. But, according to a funeral card Mary was walters wife. Also, the 1930 Census record shows Anna as Nicks mother (Nich is my grandpa) but his birth certificate Mary is listed. He was born in the 1920's long befor the 1930 census. I am so lost. the bad thing is everyone is dead, both grandparents and my dad. So, I am all alone in the search.

Hello, I am not related. Hope this helps. Ruth Pokorny

First, you did not mention whose funeral card it was. Walter's Mary's, or a child. Do you have Mary's death info?

I found a small article in the online newspapers I have access to. It indicates that Walter & Mary got a divorce in 1924 in Ohio. If they actually did get a divorce, then Anna in the 1930 census was most likely a 2nd wife. The article also mentions 2 living children that Walter wanted custody of. This doesn't make sense with 5 children living during the 1930 census. The article also mentioned that Walter & Mary were married in Connsville, Pa. in 1915. I couldn't
find a Connsville in Pa. Maybe it was meant for Connellsville in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
Maybe you would want to get a copy of this divorce.

I also found a death record of a child Anna, that died in 1919, that was only 23 days old. Parents were Ladislof Panchysyn and Maria Slabi. Walter in English is the same as Ladislof/Wladislaus in Polish.

I also found a death record of a Mary Panchyshyn, died 26 Feb 1947 in Black River, Lorain, Ohio, United States. Birth Date: 10 Aug 1891. Father's Name: Joseph Sloba. Husband John. Could this be Mary? She would have been about 8 years older that Walter. Could Walter also be named John? The record also indicated that she was married. Hmmmmm.

I also found Walter's World War I Draft Registration Card issued in 1918. This record indicates his nearest relative was Mrs. Mary Ponchyzyn. This record also indicates that Walter was born in Jolova, Austria.

Says Wife Hurt Reputation -- Because of his wife's alleged
nagging and arguing with his friends and other members of the Russian Catholic church of Loraln, Walter Panchyshyn claims he has been asked to resign as a councilman in that church. Panchyshyn charges are detailed in his petition for a divorce from Mary Panchyshyn. They were married at Connsville, Pa., in 1915 and have two children living. He asks the court for custody of these children and for their household furniture.

This is probably his death info in the Social Security Death Index.

Name: Nick Panchyshyn
SSN: 378-18-5769
Born: 5 Dec 1920
Died: 30 Oct 1990
State (Year) SSN issued: Michigan (Before 1951)

You could order his Social Security application. That should have his parents' names on it.

Have you tried ordering his birth certificate, too? (I'm not sure about the PA laws, though -- I could check to see if it would be restricted...)

I also found an article:

The Evening Repository
April 9, 1924
Lorain, O., April 9 -- (AP) Katie Panchyshyn, six, was instantly killed when she was struck by a taxi driven by Clyde Lyle here last night. Lyle was released by police.

Perhaps she was Walter and Mary's daughter?
