Hi my name is Krista Massengale. I am not a Portell nor do I think I am directly related to the Portells. I am also a decendent of Lytle Partney he was my Great-Great-Grandfather. My Great-Grandfather was John Masson son of Lytle & Ethel Masson. My Grandfather is Robert Masson son of John & Ellen Masson. My Mother is Jackie Masson Daughter of Robert & Loretta Masson. You are right that Lytle was the son of John & Margaret Masson. John was older when Lytle was born. Also this John Partney Masson served in the Cival War & is buried in Richwoods on Private Property that is now owned by a company. you cannot access the graves anymore without contacting the company. I have been out there one time & we walked for hours trying to find the grave & could not. My Mom's cousin Billy knows where the grave is & has been to it several times. He has sent me pictures of the grave & headstone. I have done quite a bit of research on the Partney-Masson. However it has been a few years since Ive really done anything with it as life has gotten so busy. I will try to answer any questions that you have & hopefully between me & my mom we can go back through some of the info we have & pass on to you.
It has never been fully understood how the whole Partney-Masson names came about to go back & forth. I know that all of the Children of Lytle & Ethel started school under the Partney name, but all of them were married under the Masson name with the exception of Harvey, he mainly went by the Partney name. Some of his children went by the Partney name but some of them went by Masson. Other than him all of the children & their children eventually took & stayed with the Masson name.
You are more than welcome to contact us & we will try & provide you with what we know. It does all get very confusing. There are quite a few partneys & Massons in the Desota area Jefferson County that would have been cousins to Lytle Partney. I believe cousins, some would have been his siblings children & so forward. They are not direct desencdents of Lytle & Ethel. Who exactly is your Mom. My mom remembers all of her Aunts & Great Aunts & Uncles etc... She was raised in Minearl Point & then later Leadwood, which ofcourse is right there. She has been in close contact with all of that side of her family most of her life. So hopefully we can help you out.
Thanks & Look forward to hearing from you, Krista
krismass14@att.net or jackie2512@att.net

I don't think this is correct info for Krista. (I can tell by Krista's screen name that her last name is Portell. I might be one of Krista's second or third cousin? My mom has a cousins named Portell.) I've been trying to untangle our family tree, too. It's a nightmare, but I might have finally figured it out.

Here's my theory: We're descended from John Partney dit Masson and his wife Margaret Politte. This other John Partney was the superintendent of the Jefferson County Poor Farm in the 1900 census.

When the family has tried to trace this tree, using Lytle Partney dit Masson as the common ancestor, it's led to confusion and roadblocks because nearly all of the early census records are wrong. Lytle Partney was the YOUNGER BROTHER of John W Partney. The census taker erroneously listed Lytle as the son of John W Masson and Etheline "Lynn" Lawson. (John W and Lynn were Lytle's brother and sister-in-law--not his father and mother.) Apparently, Lytle was being raised by his older brother, who was almost 25 years older than him. I have looked up the death certificates for both John W and Lytle on the MO Secretary of State's website. Their parents were John Partney and Margaret Politte. The cemetery records on MOGENWEB also confirm this.

The family tree also is crazy because they keep switching names, using either Partney or Masson interchangeably. For example, when Lytle married Ethel Jane Hansell he used the name Partney. In the early censuses he also switches names back and forth. It wasn't until after the 1930 census that the family name became fixed as Masson.

I'd appreciate it if Krista would contact me. Maybe we could collaborate and solve this mystery once and for all.

Krista,

If you're still around or doing research I would like to correspond with you and share information. I believe we are distant relatives. My great-grandfather was Lytle Partney (Lytle Masson), too. He was born in Richwoods, MO, and is buried outside Mineral Point, MO.

I am having the same problems with the Partney/Masson surname. It doesn't make any sense. My grandmother was a daughter of Lytle Partney/Masson, and she would use either name interchangeably through the years on various documents.

The Partneys came from France to Canada in the late 1700s mostly for political reasons. There is no record nor indication that there was any English connection. Their name was Partenais in France and Canada. They were called Partinet, then Partney in the late 19th century. In the U.S., they first settled in Illinois, then St. Genevieve, MO. Many could be found in the Richwoods area of Washington County, MO.

You probably already have this information, but I just ran across this post tonight.

This is a little late, but I came across this posting when looking for info on Partneys, and you must be Howard. There are a couple of names that need correcting and others which I can augment. The information comes from both my grandmother Lizzie’s Bible and her verbal information.

Orville was born to John WILLIAM (born in Richwoods, MO) and Mary Ann Wright Partney, whom he met while delivering milk to an orphanage in St. Louis County. She was born in Creve Cour, MO.

Most of the farm is gone but the house that John built still stands, a white two-story, at the intersection of old Hwy. 21 and Lemay Ferry Rd. The name of the cemetery in Ware is Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery, which is beside the Baptist Church. John William was a deacon in the Sandy Baptist Church.

The children were: Cora Virginia, who married Frank Pierce; John Clarence; MARY LIZZIE “Lizzie”, not Elizabeth, who married Edgar Marsden (they were my grandparents); Ella May who married ? Reece; Emma Pearl, “Pearl,” who married Matthew Marsden; Birtie Partney, who died as an infant; Eugenia Fern “Fern,” who married Filmore "Morie" Bohme; Orville Partney; Mabel Grace, who married Obie Christian; and Blanche, who married Brian Moss.

If anyone would like more information, my email address is: ixprss@att.net.
This is the info that I have. Amable Partney(b.1756 in France) married Sally Norrington Weeks He arrived in St. Genevieve, Mo. where he supposedly became a widow, married the 2nd time and she did not want the children from the first marriage. Sallys sister was married to a Masson and she took in the children, after a while they took the name of Masson (or Mason)their Uncle's name, later some of the children tried to collect a retirement from the Railroad and they took up the name of Partney again. My Greatgrandfather was Louis Partney (dit Masson), His son was John W. Partney married to Mary Wright (my grandfather) My father was John Clarence Partney b.June 21 1881 (married to Winnie Belle Lewis) and I was born at Hillsboro, Mo. Jan.19, 1924. I am a direct decendent of Amable Partney. A lot of the Partney's are buried at the Baptist Cemetery at Ware, Mo. ( Jefferson County)

My copy originated in Washington state and is dated July 28, 1963. I know nothing more about James Grover Cleveland Partney than is contained in those papers. Sorry I don't have more information for you. I do show his father as John L. Partney, brother to my great grandfather William A. Partney, both sons of Elijah Partney and Margaret M. Williams. Elijah was the son of Louis Partney and Therese Delcour. So we are cousins.

He was an orphan at the age of 9 and brought by an uncle with a brother to Quebec. Will be happy to share what info I have, just contact me by e-mail.

Elaine

I am interested in finding more information on my grandfather's family. I know he was born in Missouri, I believe in Hannibal. His family name was changed from Portnoy to Partney, when the family migrated to the U.S. I am not sure when the family came here, but I do believe the family has a French and English background. Please contact me if you have more information, or if this helps in any way.

I am looking for information on my father's family. I can not seem to find out much on the internet. I do not know much since my father nor his mother would talk about his family alot. I have always wondered about my family history, but was always affraid to ask. The only thing that I do know is the little that I was told and that is that my grandfather was killed in a accident at work by his best friend - he was ran over by a forklift. My grandmother never had any pictures of him, nor did my father so I don't know much. His name was John Partney. I don't know what year any of this happened. I would appreciate any information that you could send me. I had a great grandmother who's name was Mary Fannie Partney (I am not sure of the spelling of the middle name).

Thank You,

Mary Partney

Re: To Krista Louis C.

Howard, thank you for this information. I dont know where all of this comes in at. I am as well a Descendent of Amable. My John Partney was a brother to your Louis Partney. But My John was the son of Sally Weeks. So how my family ended up with the Masson name I guess will always be a Puzzle for us. My John served in the civil war with the name John Partney on his headstone reads Partney. HIs son Lytle was married under Partney, & all the Children were born with the Partney name, but went to school under the Masson name & most married as Masson's. My G-Grandfather was also John Masson, son of Lytle Partney Masson & Grandson of John Partney (Masson). So it is all very confusing for me. I dont know that I will ever get to the bottom of this.
Thank You for your insight.
