Hello,
I see from some of the messages already posted that several of us are looking for Native American/ boriginal people in our Paquette lines. I am looking for them too.
I know that there is a family of Paquettes whose ancestor, Exerine DuBois, was the daughter of a Mohawk Chief. I believe her husband's name was Benjamin Paquette but I'd have to look it up.
Many people in this family moved west and ended up in the Red River area. Others stayed behind. I have been unable to find my gggrandmother in this family but she did name one of her daughters Exerine so I think I'm getting warm.
My gggrandmother was born in New York State in the 1830s. Her name was Catherine Paquette. I know that many families fled Quebec in the late 1830s after the Rebellion.
About two years ago, I found a reference for a family of Paquettes at the Registrie de Hurons at St. Lorette in Quebec. They were not mine so I didn't follow up Some of you who are looking for NA/A lines might want to try there.
In the meantime, I am going to Oswego and Ogdenburg in two weeks and will visit the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation there. If I turn up anything interesting about Paquettes, who wants to know?
Good Medicine, Mary

Hi Mary: It would be so interesting to know, as it seems Exerine is my ggrandmother, and I know both of us have been seeing this thread appear. Good luck on your journey and email me at buckndoe@look.ca. Doris

Paquette-Native Amer connection
Hi Mary, going on ancestor search myself, last of July. My cousin and I will be in Malone, NY and in Montreal to hunt for data on other family surnames: Lauzon, Joyal, Lecuyer, McLeod. am interested in what you find. Our Paquettes had native amer ancestors but all we know is that our great grandfather, Alfred Paquette, was from the Saginaw, Michigan area, married Marie (Mary) Pamela Lecuyer in Montreal in 1979(?). They lived mostly in Montreal and had 9 children. Mary Pamela Paquette is our grandmother. My cousin's name is Maria Joyal. My name is Mary Pamela Captain. An help appreciated.

Hello Pam,
I learned a great deal about my family on the trip but not much about the Paquet connection. I do know some history about Metis (Mixed Blood) migration to New England, New York, and Michigan though.
Many people left Quebec circa 1838-39 after the Rebellion there. Some went to the places mentioned above and others went farther west to the Dakotas and the Red River area.
I do know that Madonna's grandmother was decended from the same family as my ggrandmother which was L'Angelier. I think her L'Angelier relative was a woman who married a Fortin. I have those lines and they were from Bay City, Michigan and were Metis.
I have seven generations of Paquettes that were mixed with Mohawk and many of them went west - most to Red River but some may have stayed in Michigan. What are your Paquet names? Maybe I have them in my charts.

Mary...Thanks for the reply. I'm leaving for my trip tomorrow night and sometime next week I'll be able to come up with some first names. All I know now are Louis and Peter, brothers of my grandmother, but I know there were seven to nine children. Will send more information then.
Thanks, again....Pam

Pam,
When you get a chance visit the Paquette Family Tree posted by myself, i.e., Kap Paquette. I think we have a Peter and Louis in our background, also from Adrian, Michigan after which most of them show up in the Detroit City Directories in the late 1800's. They were sons of William and Ann/Anna Paquette.

Hello Mary,
I have heard of a possible connection to Native Indians, but I was told by some that it was just a rumour. I have just recently been on this site and was surprised to find this such an avid topic. So yes any information you were able to get would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,

Native and Metis Paquettes
Hello Darlene,
It appears that my Paquettes were definitely Metis (Mixed Blood) and lived in and around communities of other Metis families. The route my relatives took was from Quebec to Ogdensburg, NY, then to Oswego and a couple of tiny villages around there, and finally to Rochester. My ggrand- mother died in Rochester but her youngest daughter remained there and I assume she eventually married and had children although I haven't gotten that far yet.
The strongest Native/Aboriginal link I've found so far has been the marriage of a Benjamin Paquette to Exerine DuBois, the daughter of a Mohawk Chief. That family eventually moved to the Metis settlements in western Canada like Red River but there are some of their descendants unaccounted for who may have stopped in other places along the way - Michigan, Minnesota, Montana?
Where did your Paquettes live?
Best regards, Mary
