BOARDMAN - Anthony J. “Tony” Papa, 68, passed away at his home late Wednesday morning, Aug. 14, 2013, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Anthony was born Aug. 18, 1944, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) a son of the late Frank and Seraphine Choppa Papa, was raised in Hubbard, Ohio (Trumbull County) and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1962 graduate of Ursuline High School.

Interested in the priesthood, Tony then spent two years at the St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati.
He also served six years in the Ohio National Guard.

Tony began his career working for the Dollar Savings & Trust Company (which later became National City Bank) in February of 1966. While there, he rose through the ranks to the office of Senior Vice-President of Operations, and retired after 37 years with the bank in 2003.

After retiring, he worked part-time as a driver for Gold Cross Limousine.

Tony was a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman, Ohio

Mr. Papa was also active in the community.
He was a member of the East Side Kiwanis for 42 years, where he served three terms as president and initiated the Christmas Giving program.
He also served as treasurer for Division 21 of the Ohio District Kiwanis International for six years.

Tony was a volunteer tutor for the Youngstown City School system, tutoring at Mary Haddow and Martin Luther King schools, and at St. Patrick School in Hubbard, OH.

Tony enjoyed golf, and was a member of the Mill Creek Seniors League. He served as president of the league from 2010 until 2012.

He enjoyed walking in Mill Creek Park.

He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians.
He truly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the “love of his life.”

Mr. Papa leaves his beloved wife of nearly 44 years, Xandra Phillips Papa, whom he married Aug. 30, 1969; three children, Andrea (Brian) Stamp of Boardman, Ohio, Jeffrey (Lysa) Papa of Naperville, Illinois, and Eric (Danielle) Papa of Boardman, OH; five grandchildren, Zachary and Bekah Stamp, twins Anthony and Mykel Papa, and Sophya Papa; 10 brothers and sisters, John (Dee) Papa of Punta Gorda, Fla., Mary Helen Wilson of Boardman, Ohio, Rita Gontaruk of Port Charlotte, Florida, Thomas (Fran) Papa of Hubbard, Ohio, Rosanne (Dan) Morgan of Marlton, N.J., Stella (Bill Sr.) Ryser of Brookfield, Ohio, Robert (Michelle) Papa of Austintown, Ohio, Dan (Becky) Papa of Columbia Station, Ohio, Fran (Tom) Pence of Canal Fulton, Ohio and Agnes (Dave) Moore of Mineral Ridge, OH; his father-in-law, Joseph Phillips of Boardman, OH; a brother-in-law, Roger (Eloise) Phillips of Vidor, Texas; many, many nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Tony will be truly and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Family and friends may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at St. Charles Church on State Rt. 224 in Boardman, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery, Poland, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, Tony’s family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St. Boardman, OH 44512 or Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave, Youngstown, OH 44509
