Answered Joel Neves'query on Pao Family from Madeira as he may be linked to Pao Family thru Mary Pao. Actually, it is Blandina who is linked to my family as she married John Pinto Silva - her 3rd husband. Their son Jacob is my dad's half brother.

Aunty Blandina was my father's sister. I never knew Aunty Blandina because they were not on speaking terms when she died. If what you're saying is true, then your uncle is my first cousin. I know she was married to George Grace and had four children. George Grace Jr., Alfred, Charles and Rose and I think she was married to Vierra, don't know first name. I believe my Dad was the youngest of the Pao clan and the only one born in Hawaii. Keep in touch, I do want to know more of the O'hana.

My understanding was before becoming "Pao" the family name was Rodrigues. It was after coming to Hawaii, the name Pao was added. The family carried the Rodrigues as a surname in order to recognized the family.

Wow, I am so happy that relatives found my post. My Great Grandma was Mary Rodriguez Neves. I did not know that Joseph Rodriguez Pao (I actually have Jose as his name) had 8 children. Have you seen the passenger list where he and his family left Funchal to Honolulu in 1907? I was looking at it the other day and it is fascinating. My Great Grandfather, a stowaway on that ship, took a liking to Mary Pao (or Maria as written on the list), and they later got married in Honolulu. I would love to exchange information that you have about the Pao family, most especially the Portuguese lineage of Jose Rodrigues Pao, if any. Thanks!

That's interesting about the Pao surname. If they did add the Pao name when they were in Hawaii, it must have happened on the spur of the moment, because the 1907 passenger arrival list has his name spelled as Jose Rodrigues de Pao.

You've got my interest now tho' I am not directly related. I do have some Portuguese microfilm on permanent loan from Salt Lake City's Family History Center and would like to know where the manifest you spoke of indicated the Pao family came from - the specific parish of the Funchal diocese. That would put us on the trail of your "antepassados".
