Thanks Bill C. for the ideas and names of churches where to look. The Ernestasios Panagos family I am researching currently lives in Anaheim, Ca. Ernie was born sometime in the 1920's and was the youngest of 5 or 6 brothers and sisters. One of the sisters was named Vi (Viola, Violet?).Most of these siblings also live in southern Ca.(They have not been involved in the Gr.Orthdox Church in many years, so I did not think to look there......) Ernie married a Gloria Ryder?Irion? from Denver? in the early 1950's. He has two sons : 1)Mark Panagos, who lives in Grand Junction Colo, and Gregory Panagos, who lives in Houston, Tx., and a daughtor ,Stepanie is so. Ca. Yes, family history has it that the name was originally longer, and shortened when they first came over. Also, they were supposedly from somewhere in the Peloponnisos, one of the fingers, such as Messini. Thanks for your help.

Karen Reidy:

The name was originally Panagopoulos. In means the children of Panagos, and Panagos relates to the Virgin Mary (Panagia). The province you are from is Messinia and the towns may be one of the follwing: Kalamata, Meropi, Meligala, Eichalia, or Mousta. If you know who the granparent was or great grandparent who came over, and what year, I think you can see the registry of the ship on which they came over. If the ancestor came over in the early 1900's (before WWI), and left from Kalamata, as most Panagos' did from Messinia, the ship may have been the SS Themosticles.

Hope this helps you.

My ancestors also came to the United States aboard the S.S. Themosticles. They came from Cavalla, Greece. In 1914, my great, great grandparents and my great grandmother came to the USA and passed through Ellis Island. Depending upon they settled, they may have passed through Ellis Island. If you live near New York City, visit Ellis Island to look up your family records. Good Luck!
