I am searching for this person whose name is on a funerary ribbon of LOUIS POULOS. Louis married Sophie Kukuk Kramer in Chicago. Sophie died in 1926 in Chicago. Louis was listed as her spouse but I am unable to find any information about LOUIS POULOS or LOUIS PANAGOPOULOS and am hoping to find the family associated with Louis Poulos. This attempt is to find the family through this funeral ribbon. The wake photo, the close up of the name on the ribbon and a closeup of Louis Poulos are also attached.

I have a Thomas Panagotopoulos in my family tree. He was born in Naufactos, Greece. He arrived in the US in 1903.

Thank you for responding and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to find it. If Thomas G. Panagopoulos had a son named LOUIS born 1895 and died before 1930... in Chicago, I have a photo you'd want to have; A few of them plus it would help if you knew if he was married to Sophie Kramer

Thank you. My email address is takukuk@aol.com

Is this the Louis you are looking for from Chicago? Sometimes Panagotopoulos is spelled Panagiotopoulos when in Greece. Let me know.

Nicole, my heartfelt thanks for responding. All of this happened in Chicago. I believe the photos below will explain it all:

1) My grandfather's sister, Sophie, married a man named LOUIS POULOS we have no record, found no record to prove but had to be prior to 1926.
2) Sophie Kukuk-Poulos (died in 1926) photos of her at home wake
3) Her death certificate shows LOUIS POULOS as her spouse.
4) Sophie Kukuk-Kramer-Poulos is buried in Chicago as her death certificate so states and here is a photo of her headstone.
5) Louis Poulos had to have died shortly thereafter. he is waked in the EXACT SAME HOME (note female picture at head of casket in both photos). attached are two enlargements of two bouquets around his casket. "Thomas G. Panagopoulos" is clear on one of the two ribbons. The surname is clearer in the second enlargement. There is also one other family name and it's not legible by me. I can only guess that two bouquets would have been by someone very close... a parent perhaps. Maybe a stretch.

I was told that it was common practice for many Greeks to shorten their names to POULOS which, if memory serves means, "son of"... THIS IS ALL I KNOW OF HER after 1920. It's a chapter our family knows little of and that's why I seek to find the Panagopoulos Family from Chicago in 1926. My theory is that "Thomas G" was a parent... I could be incorrect, but believe the facts are pretty clear. I have records of a Chicago-based Louis Poulos- nothing that places him with Sophie except her death cert.

If you know of any people in Chicago with that name or if you can direct me to a Greek organization that might be able to help, it would be most appreciated. Thanks again Nicole.

Ok. You have her address. You have the county. Google search the closest Greek church near that address. Call them. Ask them if their church was open during this date. If not, ask them which one would be the correct church to call. If yes, ask them to find the records of death for her, and the two men. Ask if they have a marriage record. Did they have any children? If so, find the baptismal certificate. These records will tell you full REAL names, dates, place of birth, names of parents. Very, very helpful for Greek genealogy research.

If it turns out he was born in Greece, find out what the city and village name is and we will go from there.

Can you do this?

Surely thank you for that sound advice, but tried it. 50 year old listings. The church staff weren't all that interested in helping even though I showed them the records, so resorted to calling some phone listings, reached one, left messages and none panned out. In fact the only Tom Panagapolous' where in IL, MKE, WI and OHIO. Now I am beginning to wonder if I have the FIRST NAME all wrong? That second to last letter should be an A but it doesn't look like one today.

Nicole...many many thanks for giving me another pair of researcher's eyes.

What do you have for a first name? I have Athanassios (Thomas) Panagotopoulos "Poulos". Thomas = Athanassios in Greek.
