Are you sure that Sarah Anne was born in PA? My grandmother, Hester Marie Francisco was born on June 16, 1915, at the home of her father's cousin, Dr. George Palmerton in Barbourville, NY. (This photo is posted on my ancestry page) Since I know that there were Palmerton's living in Barbourville, NY and lived in Delaware County http://www.dcnyhistory.org/palmerton_Kelsey_family.html
You may know better, but I just thought that I'd mention this to you.
Dawn

Re: Americus Palmerton

Oh, from Find a Grave, I just found the following:

"The History Of Woodland, Michigan 1837-1987": PALMERTON.

There were three pioneer Palmertons: Charles, born Oct. 28, 1811; Jerome, born Sept. 10, 1814; and their little brother Andrew Jackson, born Jan. 10, 1827.

The two oldest Palmertons located land soon after the Haights and Charles Galloway did, Charles on section 20 and Jerome on section 17. They then went back to New York State and, according to B.S. Holly, did not return to live in Woodland permanently until 1844.

The 1879 history of Woodland, however, states that they settled permanently in 1839, an account considerably strengthened by the evidence of Jerome's marriage in Woodland to Roxy Burns in 1841.

Jackson Palmerton came out in 1845, and settled in the northeast quarter of section 20 beside Charles.

The brothers had a sister, Delilah, who was married to another pioneer, John McArthur....

Jerome Palmerton married Roxy Burns in Woodland on Nov. 15, 1841. She was only fourteen years old at the time. They had six children, three of which survived infancy: Huldah, John and Americus Vesputius.

Huldah, born in 1843, married Edward Maples, who was killed in a logging accident on Feb. 22, 1876, when he was only thirty. They had only one child, Izella, born in Mar., 1874, who died on Sept. 14th at the age of six month. Huldah did not long outlive her family, for she died of consumption on Nov. 19, 1884.

Her brother John was born on Oct. 2, 1850, and died a bachelor on Mar. 26, 1925; in his day, he was considered one of the best threshers in Woodland.

Americus Vesputius Palmerton was born on Oct. 10, 1853, and was married twice, first to Ella Amelia Wickham, who died of consumption on July 18, 1880. In 1883 he married Louisa Schray. He died on June 10, 1934, and his second wife on June 29, 1931. Americus and Ella had two children, a boy who was stillborn on Jan. 13, 1876, and Roy, born in 1880. Roy married Nettie H. Crites on Oct. 11, 1896. She died in 1948 and he followed her the next year. They had three children, Laura, born in Feb., 1897, Ella, born on Apr. 26, 1899, and Victor C., born on Oct. 31, 1905. Americus and Louisa Palmerton had a daughter, Dossie, born in 1867, who married Roy Ballentine...."

That answers part of my question, but who were the parents of Sylvanus Palmerton, and who were the parents of Thomas Palmerton who married Jane Chambers more importantly?

Thanks,

Americus Palmerton

Hi,

My ancestors John Talbert/Talbot Chambers and Jane McCormick had a daughter Jane born about 1804 in CAN who had it appears from the 1870 Van Buren Co., MI, Census a son named Americus Palmerton born in 1851 in NY. Jane Chambers married Thomas Palmerton who was born about 1800 in NY and died in 1864 in Van Buren Co., MI.

I thought that since the names Americus and Palmerton were so rare in our history, I'd look for another Americus Palmerton, whom I found in Barry Co., MI, also in 1870. This Americus Palmerton was born in 1853 in MI.

There must be a close connection between these two Palmerton families possibly one or two generations back in time!

Next door to Jerome [1815-]and Roxy Palmerton [the parents of Americus, born in 1853] in the 1860 MI Census, I believe it was, was a Charles Palmerton [1816-], so it seems Charles Palmerton and Jerome were also closely related.

Family trees at Ancestry.com have Charles Palmerton with a son, as in the census, named Sylvanus Palmerton, and Anestry.com also has the father of Charles named Sylvanua Palmerton.

My guess was that Thomas Palmerton was the son of Thomas Palmerton, the son of William Palmerton and Rebecca Ellsworth. I think this assumed Thomas Palmerton, Sr., is seen in the Montgomery, Ulster [later Orange] Co, NY, in the midst of a group of Chambers to whom I think I am related by my ancestor John T. Chambers.

Does anyone have information on these Palmerton's??

Mark

I have not been able to confirm that Sylvenus's father's name was William. I have an old paper from my grandmother Helen Ludlow Palmerton with the names and dates of ancestors back to William written in her hand. It also states he was a twin and arrived in America from England when he was 4 yrs old. His twin brother died during voyage. I have been to Sylvenus's and Eleanor's graves in Barbourville N.Y. If you visit www.palmertons.com it has most of what I know.
Steve Palmerton

Re: Lyman Palmerton

BeckyJean, thank you ever so much for this information! You have supplied an important link in my search! As I re-read my original post, I am a bit embarrassed at my sloppiness of Lyman's name, I am indeed looking for James Lyman Palmerton and who also may have been known as Lyman Marcus (Marquis) Palmerton. Lyman is the great grandfather of my two daughters, Jamilyn and Jillayna. Their father (my ex-husband) Jimmy Clair Rider, was the son of Jim Rider, who was Lyman's son. Jim Rider was born on June 19, 1921 to Etta and Lyman Palmerton, and his birth name was James Lyman Palmerton Junior. I have a copy of the birth certificate. Shortly after his birth, Etta and Lyman divorced and she later married Clair Austin Rider who adopted James Lyman Palmerton Junior as his son and his name was changed to Jim Rider. Clair Rider and Etta lived in Mabton until Clair's death, and then she later moved to Portland, Oregon. I have Lyman M. Palmerton's death certificate which indicates that he was committed to the Oregon State Hospital, and resided there until his death at which time his body was transported to the Oregon Medical Science Hospital. If you ever saw the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, you would know that the film and bbook were based on the Oregon State Hospital. I knew Etta, more commonly known at Barbara Etta Rider, quite well as we spent a great deal of family time together especially when my daughters were first born. She spoke very little about her first husband, Palmerton, and basically said he was not a "very good man", without going into any details. I regret that I never pressed for more information back then! I have been trying to locate Lyman's mother, Kate or Catherine, as it appears that she died shortly after Arthur was born. Interestingly you indicate that Elizabeth Catherine was also born to James and Catherine, and yet I have not found her name in my research of census records. Do you have information as to where and when Catherine died? I had information that her maiden name was Egan, but in other records it is Maloney, and that her parents had imigrated to San Mateo, California from Ireland. It appears that she and James lived in Dalles, or The Dalles, Oregon and I think Lyman was born there before they moved to the Yakima Valley in what is now Grandview and Mabton. James Marcus later remarried and is buried in Mabton Cemetery. I plan a trip to Salem, Oregon in the next week or so to visit the Oregon Archives to obtain information about Lyman, especially his commitment to OSH. Perhaps there is something in your family records from your Great Grandfather that would explain the circumstances. I am most curious as to why his body was not claimed by a family member for burial, perhaps they never knew that he had died. I would welcome sharing any abd all information that either of us may have! My contact details are as follows:
Barbara R. Crider, 14641 SE 173rd Street, Renton, WA 98058, and my direct email address is brcrider2272@comcast.net. My family tree on Ancestry is BRHarrison Family Tree. Again, thank you for response! I am most grateful!

I'm not sure what information you need, so here is what I have: Lyman Marquis Palmerton born 20 May 1892 to James Marcus Palmerton and Catherine Elizabeth O'Callaghan in Goldendale, WA. He died 26 Feb 1942 in Salem, Marion, Oregon. Wife named Ella. (Most likely this is Etta Barbara McCallum, but I haven't found solid evidence yet. If you can provide it, I will be grateful.) Father, James Marcus Palmerton, was born 20 March 1854 to Lyman Palmerton and Nancy Leslie in Wood County, Ohio. He died 4 Aug 1932 in Mabton, Yakima, WA. Mother, Catherine Elizabeth O'Callaghan is an enigma. There is confusion as to whether her maiden name was O'Callaghan or Maloney (or Mahoney). Family members believe her to have been previously married, but again, cannot confirm which was maiden name and which was married name yet family leans toward O'Callaghan for maiden. Her first and middle name however are confirmed. She was reportedly born at sea as her family immigrated from Ireland and had a fraternal twin brother who did not survive. Siblings: Orrin Frank Palmerton born 1 July 1880; Albert J. Palmerton born Sep 1883; William Gladstone Palmerton born 15 March 1887; Elizabeth Catherine Palmerton born March 1888; Arthur L. Palmerton, Sr. born 11 Nov 1892; Gloria Palmerton. I have much on Orrin Frank as he is my great grandfather, but not so much on the others, but what else I have, I'll gladly share should you need it, including sources and hard copy documents. Simply email me.

Good luck,
BeckyJean Webster

Dear Susanne, I hope you're still following this thread. Frank Palmerton, son of Charity Hopkins and Alfred Sr. was my great grandfather, and I have only now learned of his first name. Thank you for posting this. A cousin found census info. on Charity's home, with Palmerton spelled "Parmerton" in the 1880 census, I believe, when she was married to Warren Fancher. I have a tin type photograph of her, and several good photos of Frank. We have known very little of this family until now, but I have some knowledge of Frank's life I'm glad to share.

You have probably uncovered much more information since this post, but I will note that my great-grandfather, Roy Leighton Palmerton (son of Lyman Palmerton) seemed to be quite close to his uncle Willard. Willard seemed to float around a bit among the brothers, so he can be found on the census listing for different families at different times.

In 1880, both he and Omer were staying with Lyman. In 1885, he was staying with Franklin. A Willard G Palmerton from Wisconsin is listed as a Civil War veteran and a pension index shows a Catherine Palmerton as his benefactor. In his devotional, my great-grandfather noted that Willard passed away on June 23rd 1889.

If you have uncovered additional information about this family, I would certainly appreciate hearing about it. I can't seem to get beyond Francis and Sallie Palmerton. Just as an interesting note, Roy and Lyman both spelled Sallie with the "ie" rather than the "y." This might also help in the search.

Blessings,
Heather

I live in the Town of Clifton Park, NY in Saratoga Co. My house is being featured on our Town's upcoming Historic Homes Tour on May 16, 2010. Our Town Historian has recently informed us that our house was built by Barnet (he spelled it Barent) Palmerton in approx. 1812. Sounds like this might be your GG's home? I would be thrilled to gain more information on the original family. Apparently the house was built as a farm house and included 118 acres. We own the original house and 8 acres. I've done some research on our home but the information is limited. I've learned that Barnet Palmerton was Lt. in the US army.

It was written that he came from england and settled in Saratoga New York. So I use the computer at the library.
I really have no information on Willard Palmerton other than he lived with a Catherine Johnson who was the wife of my great grandfather. It appears that at one time they both lived in Iowa but I've not been able to find out anything. My information about them being in LeRoy. What happended to LeGrand Johnson is not anything I have information to either.
If there were some place in or near LeRoy with historical information that may be helpful. As of yet I've not come across such. If you have trouble, email me directly and I'll give you the last known address I have for him. Right now I'm concentrating on the Ohio branch, which may or may not go back to this one.

This is from a letter I received in 1999, from a gentleman named Allan C. Palmerton in Haslett, MI... It may be of help to some. "On my side William came from London, England about 1750 with at least 9 set of twins. Haven't got any farther on this. William had son William bord 1794 in Saratoga N.Y. who had 12 children - Willam & 4 children left N.Y. and moved to Licking Co. Ohio 1836. One son Samuel came to Fowlerville, MI in 1837, one of first settlers. Opened a saw mill. He had 6 children. One was William who work at saw mill and in small factorys. Was in civil war shot two finger off while cleaning gun. Willam had 6 children one who was Claude - who was a farmer. Claude had 3 children one was Ernest (my father) who worked in factory...." Written as he wrote it. The rest of the letter is his personal info. Hope this helps.

In the 1860 census the data entry person fouled it up really bad. I ended up doing a query for every george born around 1855 in Saratoga county and found:

Village of Saratoga Springs, page 91

Frederick Pamerton age 33
Catherine age 26
Frederick age 13
Martha age 11
Joseph age 9
George age 5

Town of Lisle, Broome, NY 1850

F. T. Palmerton 23
Catherine 24
Frederick 3
Martha 9/12

Frederick Thomas Palmerton served in the Union Army in 1865 with Distinguished service. Martha, Frederick A., and Thomas Palmerton (b. 1864) show up from 1910 on in Spokane, Washington. All but George appear to have died childless. Any info or leads on this branch would be appreciated as they seem to be a slippery bunch. Thank you.

Raymond Palmerton
Yes, those would be them. My father does live in Ohio still, and that is the same family from what I have gathered. Where I am hitting a dead-end is with George Palmerton (Sr.) who Fred has listed as being from Saratoga, NY. The trouble is there seem to be two born about the same time. One is listed as being married to an Olivia and the other to Mary. Is your mother Virginia then?

This task is daunting, as I'm sure anyone researching this surname has felt. My grandfather actually went out of his way not to let us know the family history. What little any of us know I'll put out, and any help would be appreciated.

My grandfather was named Raymond Palmerton as well, and he was from New York. His mother was named Mary? Welch(sp?). She was adamant that it was the Irish spelling. She lived in Yonkers(died around '65 I think). Her first husband was a Fred Palmerton. She had children by a second husband, by the last name of Ray(sp?), one of which was named Ginny(Virginia) who married a man by the last name of Coots(sp?). That, in a nutshell, is about all I know. Any leads would be GREATLY appreciated.Supposedly Ginny traced the history, but if anyone had it it's gone. I'm ordering some records now, so more details are coming. Thank you for your time.

I have found a William Palmerton in the ancestry database listed in the 1820 census for Saratoga County in Hlafmoon and the in 1930 census of the same county in Clifton park. According to my grandfather's records, Samuel, son of Sylvanus(Sylvenus)Brother of Sylvenus Jr were both born in Ballston NY, in Saratoga County. However, I can not find a death of William anywwhere in NY state. There is a William Palmer in Clifton Park Cemetery registry. Could this be the same person? If anyone has information I would greatly appreciate it. I have my Great Grandmother's bible with Names and dates of births back to Sylvanus in Ballston, so I am sure of these.

He married Christiana Miller in Defiance OH 1861. Named one son Cassius....any names ring a bell. Very elusive family, any help appreciated. Thanks

Re: Palmerton or Palmatier

Chauncey Palmerton, married Christiana Miller, August 11, 1861in Defiance Ohio. (License taken out by her father) The family are in 1880 Census, name spelled PALMESTON. Stone in local grave yard (MI) is in memory of Gramma Tina, she apparently had been remarried to a Brubaker. Don't know if Chauncey died or if they divorced. He sometimes went as C D sometimes as DC. Do know he was born in Ithaca, Tompkins Co, New York 1836, did short service in Civil Was. Any information, no matter how small, greatly appreciated.
Read your inquiry. I think Fred Palmerton was my mother's brother. There was John, Fred, Mary and Julia Palmerton from Yonkers. Mary Welch Palmerton was my Aunt Mamie. I have just started this line of my family and would swap information with you. Did your father, Raymond live in Ohio?
Sorry I cannot give more info at this time as my husband is very ill but I promise to send info as soon as able. So glad that you responded to my message.
Hi Gladys. Sorry, but I have nothing on a Chance/Chauncey/
CD or DC Palmerton having been in Saratoga County and I have searched almost all of the Saratoga County records.
A William Palmerton, born in 1784 in Saratoga County, took some of his family to Licking County, OH about 1836. It is believed that William's father was Joshua Palmatier and that Joshua took the Palmerton spelling sometime around 1790 to 1800. Dan

I may have some information on your Lyman Palmerton. I am a descendant of Francis Palmerton via Franklin Palmerton, born in Allegeny County - NY, and his son Franklin Palmerton, of Rockford - WI, who died in Leroy, Mn.

I am very interested in any info you might have on Francis and his ancestors. Or on any of the Palmertons
