BeckyJean, thank you ever so much for this information! You have supplied an important link in my search! As I re-read my original post, I am a bit embarrassed at my sloppiness of Lyman's name, I am indeed looking for James Lyman Palmerton and who also may have been known as Lyman Marcus (Marquis) Palmerton. Lyman is the great grandfather of my two daughters, Jamilyn and Jillayna. Their father (my ex-husband) Jimmy Clair Rider, was the son of Jim Rider, who was Lyman's son. Jim Rider was born on June 19, 1921 to Etta and Lyman Palmerton, and his birth name was James Lyman Palmerton Junior. I have a copy of the birth certificate. Shortly after his birth, Etta and Lyman divorced and she later married Clair Austin Rider who adopted James Lyman Palmerton Junior as his son and his name was changed to Jim Rider. Clair Rider and Etta lived in Mabton until Clair's death, and then she later moved to Portland, Oregon. I have Lyman M. Palmerton's death certificate which indicates that he was committed to the Oregon State Hospital, and resided there until his death at which time his body was transported to the Oregon Medical Science Hospital. If you ever saw the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, you would know that the film and bbook were based on the Oregon State Hospital. I knew Etta, more commonly known at Barbara Etta Rider, quite well as we spent a great deal of family time together especially when my daughters were first born. She spoke very little about her first husband, Palmerton, and basically said he was not a "very good man", without going into any details. I regret that I never pressed for more information back then! I have been trying to locate Lyman's mother, Kate or Catherine, as it appears that she died shortly after Arthur was born. Interestingly you indicate that Elizabeth Catherine was also born to James and Catherine, and yet I have not found her name in my research of census records. Do you have information as to where and when Catherine died? I had information that her maiden name was Egan, but in other records it is Maloney, and that her parents had imigrated to San Mateo, California from Ireland. It appears that she and James lived in Dalles, or The Dalles, Oregon and I think Lyman was born there before they moved to the Yakima Valley in what is now Grandview and Mabton. James Marcus later remarried and is buried in Mabton Cemetery. I plan a trip to Salem, Oregon in the next week or so to visit the Oregon Archives to obtain information about Lyman, especially his commitment to OSH. Perhaps there is something in your family records from your Great Grandfather that would explain the circumstances. I am most curious as to why his body was not claimed by a family member for burial, perhaps they never knew that he had died. I would welcome sharing any abd all information that either of us may have! My contact details are as follows:
