I believe the marriage must have been before 1822, when Mordechai and Eliza (Jacobs) daughter Sarah was born in Kingston. I have Eliza's birth 1795, died Teignmouth England 20 Sept. 1869. I would be interested in what you know of her ancestry and children.

Dear Jim - Thank you for the message - Cannot help on this one - Although the name Eliza tends to repeat in the connected lines of Cohen and Isaacs - But, unfortunately, what you give me does not connect - We may need more information on the Jamaican end which is where my Palache-Isaacs connection took place. Keep in touch as there is still a possibility. Use my E-Mail address to make it easier. Regards - Richard.

My mother, Mary Palache Gregory, was the daughter of Charles Palache, who was the son--the last child--of James Palache and Helen Whitney. James was the son--the last child--of John (or Mordecai) Palache and Eliza Isaacs. James was born in New York, after his father's death in Jamaica, in 1834.

I am new to this web site--it was just shown me by a friend, and I'm not familiar with ways of using it. I'm much interested in anything about the Palache family in Jamaica or before, and in the Isaacs family. My guess is that Eliza Isaacs was English, but I don't know this. I believe she died in Teignmouth, Devonshire, in 1896.

I would appreciate any replies to this, preferably to my email address. Thank you! Judith Palache Gregory

Dear Judith - My records show that Eliza Isaacs (d. 1869) is the daughter of Moses Isaacs and Maria Cohen - daughter of Henry Cohen. Henry Cohen is the son of Moses Cohen. The aforementioned is brief, but I have more. I did not know that Eliza Palache married Mordecai also known as John. I am very interested in the Isaacs family and hopefully you have more so that I can fill in the blanks. Hear from you soon - Richard

Hi, I just happened to do a google search on my last name and I didn't expect to see so many results! ...Especially with "Jamaica" included. I was born in the U.S., but my father and grandfather, both Palache's, were born in Jamaica.. can you tell me a little about where the name is originally from?

Dear Nicole - Thank you for the message - Regrettably I cannot expand on the Palache name - but only refer you to the Internet - and wish you success - Do you have any information on an Isaacs-Palache connection in Jamaica? My information is limited. Thank you - Regards - Richard.

We are delighted to hear from some Jamaican Palaches. The earliest we are able to trace the family is to Portuuese refugees to Morocco in 16th century; Don Samuel Palache became frist Moroccan ambassador to the Netherland about 1591; his brother followed him in post 1616-37; they were among the prominent founders of the Sephardic community in Amsterdam; the first Jewish service in Amsterdam was held in Samuel's house 2 Oct. 1596; he is buried under a prominent memorial in the Oudekerk in Amsterdam. His descendant David went to the Barbados in 1667, his descendant Abraham born in Amsterdam 1701 went to Curacao in 1756; the family were large plantation holders in Jamaica, but the liberation of the slaves ruined the business, and Mordechai's wife Eliza and children were sent to NYCity, where there are many descendants including my friends for whom I have prepared a genealogy. Among his grandchildren is prominent Harvard prof of minerology Charles Palache.

Do send me what you know of your ancestry and what happened to the family in Jamaica. (Prof.) James W. Gould
