THE PAHLMANS ARE MARRIED FIFTY YEARS

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Pahlman think that last Friday was the happiest Fourth of July they had experienced in fifty years. It was their fiftieth wedding anniversary and the cause of the happiness was the congratulatory expressions that they received that day from old acquaintances and friends and relatives of Palatine, as well as from Chicago relatives who came out that afternoon and surprised them with a real golden wedding celebration. This couple are spry in thought and Mrs. Pahlman says she feels as spry physically as she did on her wedding day, July 4, 1874, when in the St. Paul’s church at Palatine, Rev. Krohm united Miss Annie Rantze and Mr. Herman Pahlman in holy wedlock.

The golden wedding celebration was a complete surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Pahlman. Members of the Abbott and Paus families of Chicago, with Mrs. Geo. F. Matthei, who is a grand niece planned the surprise. The self invited guests arrived about 3:00 o’clock ladened with a wedding cake and all the things essential on such occasions. Earlier in the day, Mr. and Mrs. Pahlman had received congratulations from old time Palatine friends, who hearing of the anniversary date, through the columns of the Enterprise, gladly availed themselves of the opportunity in extending greetings. These greetings and the surprise made it indeed a happy day for this venerable couple.

With the exception of four months immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Pahlman have lived in their present home since their wedding day.

Their reminiscences of olden days are interesting tales and there are many things about their early life that are unusual.

They were born in the same house in Chicago. The same is true of Mr. Pahlman’s brother, Henry, who married Mrs. Pahlman’s sister. The fathers of these two came from Germany together when they were young men. Arriving in America in the early 30’s and marrying, they resided in the same house. The Pahlman family moved to a farm near Long Grove and later the Rantze family followed, occupying the place known as the Deverman farm. Mr. Henry Pahlman married Miss Caroline Rantze and lived in the present Horstman homestead on Plum Grove avenue [sic]. It was from this house that Miss Annie a blushing bride went to the church and was wed on the anniversary of the wedding day of Mr. Pahlman’s parents.

Mr. Pahlman was a carpenter by trade and for many years was connected with sash and door factory and planing [sic] mill that subsequently was taken over by Abelmann and Battermann. Mr. Pahlman retired from active work many years ago. He was born Dec. 29, 1941 and will be 83 years old the coming fall. His wife is ten years younger and will be 73 years old the 21st of May, 1925.

Two children blessed this union, Mr. H. H. Pahlman and Mrs. C. F. Rennack,. There are two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Pahlman has three brothers living, Ernest, of Long Grove; Gerhardt, of Palatine; Henry, of Minnesota; two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Umbdenstock, of Long Grove; Mrs. Baker, of Palatine. Mrs. Pahlman has one sister, Mrs. Henry Pahlman of Minnesota.

The editor wishes every one of our readers could have visited this couple and witnessed their happiness that day. They have spent half a century together which has meant fifty years of happiness. Death has yet to enter their household. They find in each day contentment and pleasure, thankful for joys that have been theirs and with no fear of what the future may hold forth.
